Basis Independent Mclean 3rd or 4th grade

Any Basis Mclean 3rd or 4th graders here? Do you mind sharing your experience? We are hugely disappointed by public AAP and are seriously considering private. Basis is our top choice due to its location. Specifically, I am interested in knowing the average time a 4th grader would spend on homework as DC has a couple of ECs that takes up a lot of time daily. Thanks in advance.

My kids went there for one year. It's awful. Truly horrible. But boy can admissions do a sell job! They lie, lie, lie. I'm not sure the people in admissions actually know anything about how the school actually operates. Massive turnover constantly. Just heard the 2nd head of school just said he's quitting too. Lot the first one earlier this year. No with a brain stays there, not parents, teachers or administration. That should tell you something right there.

If Basis is a good location for you, look at Little Langley.

Saw something on another thread, is head of school Ron Kim (who came from Exeter) really leaving after <1 academic year???

+1 for The Langley School (our child, who is younger, loves it) or Potomac, if you are looking near McLean.

Ambleside is moving to Lewinsville and Leesburg Pike.

Yes, to prior question. Ron Kim announced this week that he will not be back next year. He started as head when the prior one left with no notice in the early fall. The announcement was made just after everyone had their enrollment fees due; on purpose no doubt. I don't know if the people new to the school even know unless someone currently there has told them. I'm sure they won't make an announcement to the new people. This has been their method all along: make huge promises, get your check and signature, then make major changes to your detriment immediately thereafter. I've seen it there more times than I can count. I would take literally any school over this one. Thankfully, we had already decided not to return (it wasn't a hard decision), so we weren't caught by this bait-and-switch this time. But I feel really sorry for those who have been suckered in.

There seems a lot of management/administration turmoil. Are the students impacted directly, or are they able to continue follow the curriculum and learn? Thanks.

I saw in multiple places that Basis lied. What exactly are their lies?

Homework load is heavy. Bright, motivated kids can still expect an average of more than an hour per night in 4th and 5th grades. Add in some time to "study" and it can get quite heavy.

I have not experienced outright, intentional lies, but I would not be surprised if others have experienced that from one of the many unqualified administrators. I have experienced frequently changing policies, inconsistent standards for teachers, miscommunication and misrepresentation, numerous promises made and broken. They say they have a solid track record as the BASIS network, but it does not show at this campus. There are so many problems that are not being addressed. The entire administrative team is incompetent and dysfunctional, on this campus and beyond McLeanto the people running all the independent schools. The first head of school was amazing, and the second one came from a prestigious school. If the new interim head becomes the permanent head, I will move my kids to another school. The academic program is advanced, but everything else is a disaster and heading in the wrong direction.

It's a hot mess there with Head of School turnover, corporate pressure and teachers leaving. I've heard really angry parents from DC charter school too. I want to check out Mysa micro school for my 7th grader in Bethesda as some of my friends' are loving the Georgetown campus.

This looks like a very Christian school. Probably not what the OP is looking for if they are looking at Basis.

The basis dc middle school has been outstanding for my child : academically better or on par with its competition, ability to take algebra in 5th grade, no tolerance for bad behavior and enthusiastic teachers. And FREE!
