Family Life Education in FCPS

Anonymous
do you know that FCPS teaches about "oral sex" to 7th graders and "anal sex" to 8th graders (18 times in one year of lessons)?!? I wasn't aware of this.

this from a post by someone who attended a FLECAC meeting last Thursday- full post here: https://stream.org/sex-ed-and-stalinism-at-the-local-school-board/
The Family Life Education Curriculum Advisory Committee (FLECAC, pronounced flea-cack) advises the Fairfax County School Board for the content of the sex-education lessons taught to students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The FLECAC committee is made up of about two dozen people. They’re appointed by the Fairfax County School Board. Four voting members are students, and most other members appear to be teachers and administrators.

One county employee member asked why there was no lesson on anal sex for the seventh graders. There was oral sex, but why was anal sex missing? The chairman of the committee assured her that the anal sex begins with lessons in the eighth grade.

This revealing moment was followed by another: The chairman actually apologized, with a nervous laugh, for using those graphic terms.

Did it not occur to her, or anyone else on the committee, that she was apologizing to the adults in the room for using words that are scripted into the lessons they have created for children?

I am one thousand percent okay with teachers teaching sex ed. Actually a zillion percent. Have you SEEN the internet? I will take a common sense, accurate discussion any day over what an uninformed tween or teenager might conjure up on their own.

More sex ed!

OP, I am dismayed over this topic too. I will be opting my child out of this curriculum and will be teaching her sex-ed AT HOME b/c I feel that is *my* responsibility as a parent, and not the school's responsibility. For crying out loud, people. Teach your kids and stop relying on the schools to do everything. This is how we've end up with this horrible type of curriculum of this so-called FLECAC committee. Ugh.

Yep, I covered both of these topics with my 5th grader this year. The kids are already talking about these things so 8th grade is too late.

I laugh at people who say not to rely on schools to teach their kids this stuff. Um, they are still learning this stuff, just not from the teachers. So, best have it addressed. By teachers. By parents. Both.

I was fine with it when my children took it when they were in MS. Our Congregation also does a year long sex education and responsibility class for RE during 8th grade (they go over the specifics but also good/bad relationships and how to act). They went well together.

This isn't anything new OP.

There was pushback but it fell on silent ears.

Our church put out flyers spreading awareness about what FCPS was teaching in FLE.

Unless you go private, you'll have to opt out your kid.

Agree. I started talking about sex ed topics fairly early. I started with teaching my kids when they were young what areas of their bodies are private and when it is appropriate for a grown up to see their bathing suit areas (a parent wiping after number two or a doctor doing a check up). We also taught them three adults they could speak with if they were ever in an unsafe place or situation. It went on from there.

But I loved that what we were doing at home followed the fcps health learning outcomes. It was actually cool to have a framework to build off of and we and the school reinforced messaging.

I am on the side of more not less sex ed.

OP here; thank you for the responses. We are new here and our children are not looking at the computer all the time. It is important to know about your body but I don't like the teaching about "anal sex" to a 13 yr old. We'll adapt. Thank you.

YOu can see all of the lessons on your Blackboard account. And if they are age-inappropriate, then opt your kid out. My kids just hate them. I've opted them out of some of the topics. It's just too much for them.

That said, I wish they would allow me to put my kid into the lessons I opted them out of in years past. I.e. if I opt my 5th grader out of a lesson b/c I think s/he isn't going to handle it well, I might want that same kid to get that lesson when s/he is in 6th grade. But, what happens is that if you opt out of parts of 5th grade, then that lesson is gone, even if it is the right lesson for your child a year later. Then you only have the choice of yes/no on the 6th grade lessons (which are likely the same issue as I had last year -- too mature for their level)... so I might opt out of some of those... etc.

They don't let you put the kid into the lesson that IS on their level.

The schools have open houses at the beginning of each year to go over the FLE content for the upcoming year. Parents can ask questions and review the materials in person.

If she had been compelled to use words like masturbation or ejaculation she probably would have apologized as well, because those are not words that you would expect to hear in such a venue. It doesn’t make them inappropriate to discuss with kids in “family life” education.

You're kidding, right? What sex related terms would be inappropriate to use in a committee meeting putting together a curriculum for sex-ed? But who is on this committee and is there any selection process to ensure that it is representative of the community? Are there priests, mullahs, rabbis, wiccans, shamans, and psychologists - people who have thought and trained in what sex is all about? Is FCPS just "winging it" with 25 people who know nothing other than what they learned in their own experience? Who are these people and on what basis are we entrusting them with teaching our children about sex?

Uh, consider the source of the hysteria in that article. Extreme right wing Breitbart contributor. But hey- if you use Stream.org as a news source you probably already knew that.

I've taught my kid about sex. She knows sex is PIV. but I could use some honest advice on when/how/why/what re: oral and anal. I'm sooooooo not a prude I swear. I just don't even know how or why or when to approach that
