Eggo Waffles Recalled

Anonymous
Yikes!!

A Georgia Department of Agriculture lab test found listeria monocytogenes in an Eggo waffle sample and as a result, Kellogg's has temporarily shut the plant down to find the source and begin sanitizing procedures.
They're recalling the following Eggo waffles:

•Kellogg's Eggo Cinnamon Toast waffles, 10-count package, UPC code 3800040440 with Best If Used Before dates beginning with: NOV22 10 EA, NOV23 10 EA and NOV24 10 EA.
•Kellogg's Eggo Toaster Swirlz Cinnamon Roll Minis eight-count package, UPC code 3800023370 with a Best If Used Before date beginning with NOV15 10 EA.

The contaminated batch was never sent to stores and they are recalling the above products as a precaution only since they were produced at the same plant.

So I've been avoiding deli meat and soft cheeses and sushi for months now to avoid an insanely rare condition only for listeria to be found in...waffles? That's it, I'm getting an Italian cold cut sub for lunch.

FYI, my OB said that there has only been *1* case of listeria in the d.c. area in the past 30 years and it was from brie.

More reason to stop using processed foods. (We had frozen waffles for breakfast.)

my god, i want an italian sub like nobody's business. i told my husband that as soon as he cuts the cord and gets a good look at DS, he is to immediately walk out of the hospital and go get me one.

where is the best place to get an Italian sub?
I know of The Italian Store in Arlington. what about near Bethesda?

My doctor told me that in last like 50 years listeria cases have come from isolated contamination in brie, hot dogs, melons and ham. She said in Europe they tell pregnant women to avoid raw vegetables because outbreaks over there have come from consuming uncooked produce... So if you take all deli meats, soft cheeses, fruits, veggies, hotdogs and now waffles (of all things) out of the picture because of an extremely minute risk.... well you get the picture. What is pregnant women to eat?
I understand the risks and have avoided certain foods during my 3 pregnancies, then again I also feel kind of paranoid at times

Your OB is full of sh*t. My twins died from this and I wasn't the only pregnant female in the hospital with listeria at the time. Get a better OB. These cases were widely known at the time by a full range of doctors in this area.

You can get a fancier italian sub from this amazing seemingly dive place in Bethesda called Cornucopia. It's a tiny italian market/bakery accross the street from the Duron paint store. They have unbelievable proscutto, salami, and other meats. They do their subs with mesculen greens and real balsamic and olive oil. Sooooo good.

Wow. Maybe I do need a new OB. That's pretty scary. I'm sorry for your loss.

Thank you. I didn't mean to be so short, but this is the one topic on this board that really gets me going. There just seems to be so many people that don't realize the real danger of listeria. Obviously, it changed my life and cost me two family members.

My OB in Bethesda had a patient lose a baby in her second trimester to it.

PP, I am so sorry for your loss and think that it is great that you let your voice be heard on a matter that so affected you and your family.

As a pregnant woman, I have done my best to avoid all the usual suspects (deli meat, soft cheeses, uncooked hot dogs, etc.). Does anyone know if I should be avoiding other foods as well? I too was under the impression that listeria was very rare.

PP with the uninformed OB again. I also applaud you for bringing your situation to people's attention, including mine. I think it is rather reckless of my OB to downplay it like that. I'm a better safe than sorry kind of person, so I stay away from stuff anyway (which he of course did advise). But I can see how all the posts with "food rebels" would be upsetting for you.

To the PP asking about what else to avoid--make sure you wash produce really well, and don't trust bagged veggies and salads without washing for yourself.

PP whose twins died. The food that I ate that was contaminated was pate. The CDC and Dept of Agriculture both investigated. Agriculture forced a nationwide recall of the product. CDC and MD Health Dept, working together, used my blood to create a DNA fingerprint of the listeria type that was in my blood to figure how many people across the country were affected. Men, women and, horribly, pregnant women. President Clinton consequently issued an executive order to HHS/AG to have food processors/packagers of meat products adopt strategies to discover whether their products were contaminated before leaving their facilities (a "microdot" system on the packaging commonly used in Europe). GAO's cost benefit analysis sided with regulation. Bush repealed the Executive Order on his first day in office. Senator Harkin is a great advocate on issues of food safety and his office asked me to give testimony on the hill -- on Sept 13, 2001. It was canceled after the 11th and focus has now shifted to bioterrorism as opposed to simple food safety issues like packaging and processing.

So yes, I am rather sensitive to the whole Listeria debate that sometimes is played out on DCUM. And I realize that the risk is small that someone will contract it but I would gladly have given up the pate if my OB would have told me it would save me the anguish of setting two less plates at my table on every holiday.
