I have a family of 3 travel budget of $1,000. Where can go on this budget? It can be multiple trips or one trip, just looking for suggestions. I have a 3 year old, but also welcome recommendations that are not kid friendly. I live in Baltimore. |
Camping. |
Telling us your likes and dislikes would help. |
Give us some parameters. Outdoors, city, what is your child into? Preferred season to travel? Do you have access to a car? |
Get an Airbnb in a place like Pittsburgh for 3 nights. |
OP here. I have very diverse interests and like to try new things, so no parameters on that front. I have a car suitable for road trips. I would prefer not to drive more than 4-5hrs max. |
OP again. Also wanted to add I prefer not to travel in winter. The other seasons are fair game. |
Harpers Ferry. Pittsburgh. Shenandoah. |
We're going up to Rhode Island for a long weekend this spring. I just booked it. Southwest is having a flight sale so it's only $140 round trip. There are some cheap but nice 1 bdrm Airbnbs in Providence and I'll bid on a rental car on Priceline. I fully expect it to be under $1k. We plan to visit Newport for a day, maybe drive to Boston, and wander around Providence.
I did a weekend away in Philly a while back. Also bid on a hotel on Priceline. I stayed at the Courtyard in Center City for under $100/night, but parking was expensive. There's so much history and great food there. It's a quick drive too. |
Take your kid to Dutch Wonderland or Sesame Place.
Or go to Williamsburg-- Great Wolf Lodge, Busch Gardens, Historic Williamsburg or Jamestown. |
I had never considered Pittsburgh before. Any recs on specific things to check out there? |
Without kids:
Trip #1 - Destination: Jim Thorpe, PA Drive Time: Attractions: White Water Rafting, Yuenglying Brewery Tour, Estimated Cost: ~$800. This is assuming money for gas and approx. $200 for food after the initial pizza meal. Day 1 - Drive to Pottstown, PA (driving time is 2:40). Attend the free 11am brewery tour. Walk from the brewery to Roma Pizza for lunch (~ $12 for 4 pepperoni slices, tax, and tip). Drive to Jim Thorpe, check into the Mountain View Suites (http://www.jtmountainviewsuites.com/). If you go in early may it will be $140/night (that includes tax and fees). Hike to Glen Onoko Falls. Return to hotel, eat at a local restaurant, check out the shops, etc. Day 2 - Whitewater rafting in the gorge. This will be approximately $50/person for a 5 - 6 hour trip (4 hours on the water). After rafting, relax, buy yourself a few beers in the town. Day 3 - Bike along the Lehigh Gorge Trail, cost will be $40/person which includes bikes and a shuttle to and from the trailhead. Return to town, eat, drink, etc. Day 4 - Spend breakfast in Jim Thorpe, if times allows, you can do more hiking in the gorge. Return home. |
Pittsburgh with Kids:
Drive out Route 68 to avoid the turnpike tolls. Stop at Ohiopyle to allow the kids to run around, then travel into Pittsburgh. Things to do: One of the inclines, the science museum (which could be an entire day). You can take a picnic with you to eat while you are there. They have a nice kids museum, natural history museum. Go to Randyland, take a Gateway Clipper tour of the river, go to a Pirates game. There's a lot that you can do. |
The brewery is in Pottsville. Pottstown is a philly suburb. You could also throw Knoebbel’s Grove into this mix. You can rent a small place in VA beach (Sandbridge) for a week for under $1000 if you go after Labor Day and the water is still warm. |
Someone just told me about the website packupandgo. You give it a budget and some general guidelines and it creates a trip for you. Might work for OP. |
