Boston Private Middle and High Schools Recommendations

Which Boston (in city) private schools do you recommend for middle and high schools. Can you compare them in reputation or personality to DC private schools for reference?

My dream would be to move home and send my kids to winsor & Roxbury Latin.

For coed I’d look at nobles as my favorite

What kind of vibe are you looking for?

RL is like St. Albans but with better college placement. Similar vibe

Winsor is like NCS but with better college placement and a much more supportive/kind culture.

I’d imagine the 3 schools mentioned are ridiculously hard to get into these days. They were tough even when I was in the area decades ago and everything admissions-related seems to have gotten more competitive since then.

Thank you. This is helpful.

I agree with the assessment of the PP about RL, Windsor and Nobles - all great places. Nobles is very sporty so I wouldn't send a child there who isn't into sports. RL is just a great all-around place and I spent a lot of time with RL guys in high school doing plays and on Model UN trips. They all went to top notch schools - several to Harvard.

Lots of other options depending upon where in the Boston area. Milton is a great school with both boarding and day options but extremely difficult to get into. I love Thayer as well for those on the South Shore and it has come up a lot over the years. Also Tabor if you're going further towards the Cape. Belmont Hill is worth a look for boys and Dana Hall for girls (has boarding and day).

For middle school I know a lot of boys who went to Fessendon School, which goes through 9th and has boarding. I assume lots of the grads continue onto boarding somewhere in 10th.

BB&N in Cambridge is great too.

FYI - we moved to Boston 3 years ago. the "Big" private school here baseline is 45-50k not 40 - 45k, it's more expensive. Winsor does have better college placement than NCS, but the environment is not that supportive. The current head is the old US head at NCS. What ages/genders are your kids and where will you be living?

Concord Academy - about 24 miles outside Boston (boarding) is by far one of the best privates on the East Coast. Its worth investigating.

I went to Milton and the academics were fantastic. Amazing faculty. I will say, when I went there the extracurriculars were a little over the top, competition-wise. You could have tons of experience in a sport or art, but basically be unable to do it. Which seemed silly because ... it's high school. But maybe they've calmed down since! Milton is K-12, but the lower school is tiny. Something like 80% of my class joined in 7th and 9th.

I agree with the R-L and Winsor suggestions; Winsor was also known to be super intense when I was a kid. BB&N has a great location in Cambridge. I also had friends who went to the Park School in Brookline through 8th and then came to Milton.
