Parents stay away from this school...it's a scam. They have an incredible talent as salespeople but they're not educators. Folks the place is a lemon....they're trying to sell a "BMW" with a third class motor. Go to Deal, Washington Latin, which ever but forget about this place. This school generates too much controvesy left and right....why take the risk with your kids.

....it's not a laughing matter what BASIS does...it's malpratice http://www.examiner.com/article/no-basis-for-d-c-basis-public-charter-school http://www.examiner.com/article/basis-dc-has-tough-night-front-of-the-public-charter-school-board In denying their request to expand the PCSB states "As the school has been open for less than a year, there is no performance data on the school. There is, however, some troubling early data that leads staff to recommend not increasing the school’s enrollment ceiling at this time. This includes high levels of mid-year withdrawals and low levels of special education students. The school has also been non-compliant in responding to certain PCSB data requests, including a City Council request for salary information." http://washingtonexaminer.com/students-leaving-mid-year-raise-questions-for-charter-school/article/2527126 |

Oh, that's comical, PP. Sorry but the reality of BASIS DC is that they are every bit as much on track for as stellar of a record as they earned in Arizona given the fact that they are already beating out all other DC schools in academic competitions, for example sweeping the Science Bowl and Letters About Literature competitions in just the last month alone.
The only "controversy" is that they set the bar high. Higher than the low-performing educational establishment in DC is used to, and as such they feel threatened by it. |

Concerning the denial for the BASIS expansion NACSA says:
"Even more odd is the fact that nine other requests for enrollment increases from other schools were all unanimously approved on the same night that the request from BASIS was denied. So what explains the difference in treatment for BASIS?" http://charteringquality.org/active-authorizing/ |
Tell ya what. Why don't YOU go out and open a charter school of your own to serve whatever needs it is you think are going unmet, to serve whatever model you think is so perfect, and just LEAVE everyone else alone. The rest of us really do not share your over-the-top agitation and hysterics over this. |
Straw Man |
Get your facts straight. The board also turned down Creative Minds' request for an increase at the same meeting citing that the school is still new as a reason. I have heard it is normal for the board to turn down a new school's request for increases in enrollment. They also approved some schools that clearly do not meet the needs of all DC students such as Carlos Rosario which caters to adult students. |
Ad hominem |
Tu quoque |
| 22:30, with that counter argument, you have just made the case that we need to shut down EVERY school in DC for not meeting the needs of every child in the city. |
wow, you really need help! |

"*Brown reports, and the PCSB noted Monday night, that “43 students — nearly 10 percent — have left the school” since October 5, the day used to count students for funding purposes. “Seven of them were students with disabilities.” In response to these numbers, Brown notes that “Paul Morrissey, head of school for BASIS, said attrition is often high in the first year of operation of a BASIS school, but tends to drop as students and families learn what BASIS demands. Nearly one-quarter of students withdrew from a BASIS school in Peoria, Ariz., during its first year of operations, he said.” "

I had not seen those before, they are very disturbing. Total number of students 700 Asian 148 21% African Amer.: 28 4% Hispanic 138* 20% White 370 53% *61% of the students in the Tucson school district are Hispanic. Total number of ELL, Migrant, Free Lunch, and SPED students: 0 and Enrollments by Grade Grade 5: 121 Grade 6: 125 Grade 7: 125 Grade 8: 102 Grade 9: 58 Grade 10: 57 Grade 11: 34 Grade 12: 21 Total ADM: 675 Out of 121 5th graders, only 21 make it to senior year? 0 ELL students? 0 FARMS? 0 SpEd? And in the meantime, the non-profit school has paid $9.8 million of their $13.7 to the two founders' for-profit corporation for "materials"? No wonder they wanted to expand to DC (and anywhere else, for that matter). They're making an absolute killing in taxpayer dollars. That certainly explains why they've been reluctant to share their financial data, which is part of why the PCSB dinged their request to expand. There's a lot to hide. I'm pretty enthusiastic about capitalism, but not cronyism. This is disgraceful. |
| ^^ this information is from one of the Arizona schools. There is no such data publicly published about Basis DC. Anecdotally, I know there are SPED and FARM students at Basis DC, though I do not know the number totals. |
Yes, that's from Tucson. Isn't that the showplace school? |
