Whitman HS Suicide

Anonymous
Sad news. Happened last night at Mass Ave and Little Falls Parkway.
Just received e-mail from principal.

Dear Whitman Community,

A Whitman student unexpectedly died last night, and our school is in mourning. xxxxxx was a 10th grader, a member of the jv volleyball team, a cheerleader, and next year she was going to be a leader of our Animal Rights Club. We have numerous upset staff and students. Our counselors are meeting with students and staff, and MCPS has sent additional counselors and psychologists to help. Nothing saddens me more than the loss of a child. I will share any information I learn from the family regarding arrangements as they become available. Please keep xxxx and her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Alan Goodwin

They had better watch out, suicide clusters are a thing...

Not sure why it is necessary to post this here or why you would think it was a suicide. Think of the family please.

My DS at Whitman said it was suicide but I'm not sure if that is true or a rumor. It is horribly sad.

I don't think it is disrespectful to the family to share this news. Everyone is grieving for them and discussing ways to prevent future incidents. I pray for the family and the sad loss of life with so much ahead of her. I also pray that I get my two teenagers through the next 5 years. I know they have a lot going on in their lives that I may not know about. Scary

Exactly ! Well said ! Sharing the story, alerting/alarming parents, and we all pray for the family for their loss!

Happened on Mass Ave where the Capital Crescent Trail crosses. I wonder if she jumped from the bridge. Tragic.

+1

So sorry for the loss. And a good (though sad) reminder to us as parents that our teens go through so much.

This has nothing to do with Whitman High School. The young woman just started there this year. Please be respectful of your posts. And remind your children to be kind to someone today who may be hurting. Kind to someone who may be shunned, or an outcast, or has made a mistake in their life and is trying to do better. Just tell them to be kind. There are many of us out here in pain today thinking of this wonderful young woman and her loving family.

There were two suicides last year at a school in the NE consortium. This isn't just a Whitman problem.

There is a crisis in teenage mental health that has reached epidemic proportions. So many girls, especially, trying to show how popular they are do not realize the impact on others.

Just remember that depression in teens looks different than adults. A very active and outgoing teen I know tried to commit suicide 7 years ago. She has permanent brain damage. No one had any clue that she was stressed (beyond normal HS senior stress) or unhappy.
