Is Stride Rite the best for first shoes?

My son is just starting to walk at 17 months. Stride Rite, or do you (or did your pediatrician) recommend a better brand?

Unless your child has an issue with his feet you should be great with Stride Rite shoes. No pediatrician will ever have an opinion on brand of shoes. However, if you have concerns you should visit a pediatric orthotic doctor.

Our pediatrician did not have an opinion other than having a flexible sole. Like you can easily bend the shoe in half. Fit is important - Stride Rite and Nordstrom are good at measuring and fitting new walkers in shoes. There are some other independent shoe stores I've heard people talk about as well, I think Shoe Train is one?

Stride Rite Soft Motion is great, but only goes up to size 6. That's probably fine, but your son may grow out of them pretty soon (my 20 month old is in size 6-6.5). We also do Pediped, See Kai Run, Bobux, and Hanna Andersson (surprisingly good for not shoe specific brand). Look for soft soles with the curved toes that bend really easily in your hand. Carter's Every Step is great too, and more affordable than other brands.

It's been a while, but when my DD was a toddler, we always bought Stride Rite for her due to her wide feet. They are middle of the pack, decent shoes. I would not buy anything cheaper, like Old Navy or The Children's Place. They do not have enough heel support and lacks traction on the soles of the shoes.

With my first, we went to Stride Rite, but now that they've all closed, we took my second to Nordstrom and picked up a pair of See Kai Run. They are adorable and have held up really well. She's about to outgrow them, so I guess I need to go back.

I have worked with infants and toddlers for 15 years and Stride Rite is my top pick for my own son.

We started with Freshly Picked Mocs when he started walking at 10 mo., and then switched to Stride Rite Soft Motion around 12/13 mos.

We have tried other brands--See Kai Run, Plae, etc., and returned them.

I am all about hand me downs for everything except shoes.

We went to the shoe dept in Springfield mall.

Our twins wore Stride Rite as long as they could. And it was the best thing my In laws did for them. They never had any problems with there feet.

Stride Rite is great and I like that you can print off something for measuring their feet now that there are so few brick and mortar stores.
If you're near Chevy Chase circle go to Ramer's for foot measurements and great brands, stride rite included.

Both my DCs, with completely different feet, absolutely loved Pediped, from 1st shoe until they sadly grew out of the brand.

Shoe Train in Cabin John is great. They sell a variety of brands and know which ones are better for specific feet.
