Kindergarten lottery strategy

DD has struck out two years in a row so we have been at our IB in the Brookland area. It has been pretty much ok, better than expected, but I am obviously looking to get her into a better middle school feeder and somewhere with more on-grade-level peers. We won't have sibling or any other kind of preference anywhere until 1st grade. So I'm asking, what would be some good schools for her to get into for K. I know what schools I like the best, but for the other 12 spots, are there any schools that are expanding, moving to the area, or otherwise especially easy to get into for K? TIA!

Shining Stars and ITS went through a whole lot of waitlist spots for K this year.

Last year too. Still need a better than average draw.

Stokes will be opening a new campus next fall but I don't think they will have K in year 1 or just PK3 and PK4. Worth investigating though.

I knew about Shining Stars, but how far did ITS go?

I have heard good things about JO Wilson. It doesn't get a lot of DCUM love, but it feeds to Stuart-Hobson, which will probably be a solid choice by the time your DC enters 6th.

Shining Stars added at least 2 classes this year. Next year will not likely repeat itself there.

ITS only went to 13. How is that "far down?"

Anyhow, I would put Bridges on your list. It's a solid school with a beautiful building.

And yes, put Inspired Teaching on.

Also, Cap City PCS.

D.C. Bilingual if you want Spanish.

You have a good shot at all but ITS. And an okay shot at that. Visit open houses at all and see which fits your family best.

ITS went to 35 LAST year.
New Mundo Verde should alleviate a little of the stress.

ITS went to 13 in the August data this year. That means they'll likely go well past that by Count Day.

New Mundo is not opening in time for OP's child.

It's all about master number -- if you don't get one it doesn't really matter. Fortunately she will have 2 kids playing next year, which gives her another shot.

OP - the WL movement will be updated once more through October link above.

Take a look at that, and watch the DCPCSB meetings to see who may wind up expanding, replicating and opening.

They burned through a lot of the waitlist in the previous school year too. Less in 15-16, before the whole location mess.

I think Mundo Verde has more K seats than PK4, so you could try for that. A lot of them would probably go to older siblings of newly enrolled PK3s though, right?

Try for Lafayette. Big school that's pretty easy to get to from the Brookland area. Because it's big, lots of K classrooms. If they end up with enrollment numbers that push them close to 25 per class, they'll consider adding a classroom which could mean they'll tap the waitlist to ensure that all classrooms are sufficiently full.
