I say this as someone with British blood, so it pains me to even say this. But lately I've noticed how incredibly rude and obnoxious many (not all) Brits are towards Americans. Lots of underhanded comments and snideness. I mean, what gives? I thought they were our major ally. I've lived in several foreign countries and never seen that level of condescending rudeness |
Really? I worked on a team with British, French and Israeli groups--the Israelis were SO rude (and I'm Jewish-this isn't a weird anti-semitic thing). Everyone else was pleasant. |
I have never met a rude Brit, that I can recall. You really shouldn't paint people with such a broad brush. |
My DH is British and I don't think he'd argue with you. On the one hand, Brits can be incredibly polite and never really tell you if they're upset, offended, etc. On the other hand, many, particularly the younger ones think Americans are obnoxious and full of themselves. They hate Trump and perhaps group us all together. The worst is when they hear things like us chanting 'USA USA USA.' They don't understand all the patriotic stuff and think we're arrogant. These are obviously vast generalizations and not always the case. What kind of snide comments are you hearing, OP? |
Sense of superiority and they're still angry about that tea we destroyed... |
That's exactly it- basically comments about "obnoxious Americans". Which I can KIND OF understand in the context of cultural differences and not liking Trump, etc- however, when it moves over into "Americans have no sense of humor" "Americans have the worst food" "Americans all dress like slobs" I start to think it's just flat out unacceptable generalized rudeness |
I don't find the Brits rude but really reserved.
In terms of rude, I have a difficult time with South Africans. I find them painfully rude. |
I don't find Brits to be especially rude, but I do find that they don't suffer fools.
We have a lot of fools. |
When you're the best, people are naturally envious. It's a lot to ask when you're the best for people to also give up their competitive nature and just love you also. If I were a competitive person from Britain I would feel trapped in a euro country where they throw impediments in front of trying to achieve your dreams. I would feel like I was missing out by not being an American citizen . |
C+ Try again. Maybe it'll be better. |
NP. You get an F-. I would say try again, but there's really no point. |
I've noticed this too , honestly. Only recently, though. |
It seems after Trump it's happening more. I'm finding it less easy to be like "Oh, just the Brits, whatever". Lately it seems to have moved into downright unbridled hostility |
Yes, I think that's it. Last week, I was in an airport lounge and smiled hello at an English man in the elevator. You know, like normal polite people do. He gave me a nasty look and said, "What do you want?" Bizarre. Could have just been him, but - I travel a lot, and I've noticed a lot of this lately (and I'm an overweight woman, so obviously American). |
Some Brits and other Europeans are rude and negative towards Americans. As you said, we're supposed to be allies. But seriously, have y noticed how we're officially acting towards allies? With friends like us, who needs enemies? |
