when do you flip the crib mattress to the softer side?

Our son is 9 months old, crawling, etc., probably past SIDS risk, right? Just wondering if anyone knows offhand. Will ask doc when we go for 9-month checkup in a week.

i didn't know there was a soft side. is this true of all mattresses?

OP here. I don't recall what kind we have--whatever the Baby Bargains book recommended--but it has a hard side and a softer, foam side.

It's not true of all mattresses. The hard side is for infants, softer side for older babies. We flipped ours after a year.

Mine has instructions on the tag on the mattress, and I think it says to do so when the child reaches a certain weight. (Haven't peeled off the mattress pad lately, so I don't recall whether mine ws 35 lbs or 36.)
