Does anyone have a DH who works for the federal government? If so, what insurance is the best for IVF, IUI, medsetc.. any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated...

I think this has been posted on here before, so you may want to search the archives.

I work for the Federal gov't and found that MD IPA had the best coverage for IVF (they cover 50% of IVF costs for up to 3 attempts per live birth. They also cover the meds for covered cycles - I paid an average of $150 out of pocket for the meds per IVF cycle and about $4200 out of pocket for IVF/ICSI per cycle.) MD IPA does not have the best coverage for IF diagnostic tests however (HSG, mock embryo transfer, etc.) They pay 50% for anything IF-related, whether diagnosis or treatment.

If you have not already had all the diagnostic testing, the best thing to do if you can is to get diagnostic testing done at the end of one year using Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance and then switch to MD IPA in January for the actual treatment.

Good luck!

Yes, you can. I think the MD in MDIPA actually stands for "medical doctor" and not "Maryland."

One thing to check, when I was looking into fed plans I noticed that they have different defintions of an IVF cycle. I believe that MDIPA defines a cycle as starting when you get your first shot (so if your cycle gets cancelled it still counts as one of the 3 cycles MDIPA will cover). Other insurers (if I am remembering correctly) had less generous coverage but didn't count a cancelled cycle as a cycle. Good luck...

This is true of MD IPA. They also count a FET cycle the same as a fresh IVF cycle.

another thing to keep in mind is MD IPA's definition of infertility. aetna has good coverage, as well, and the cycle doesn't count until you go for egg retrieval. it is worth comparing, depending on your situation.

Aetna just gets you on the meds. Mine were always between 3500 - 4500 a cycle (as much as the IVF) compared to MD IPA with is only a few hundred...
