Two Rivers Young

We are wait-listed at Two Rivers Young, and have a strong chance of getting accepted into PK4. Any insights on how it compares to PK at Hill schools such as Peabody, Ludlow Taylor, etc. ?

There are a million threads on TR Y that you can search for. But partly it depends on your commute - it would be a lot different than going to Peabody for instance.

Our commute would be approx. 12 minutes by car. Our neighborhood DCPS school is 5-7 minutes walk. We like it a lot, but are wondering if TR Young would be better.

go with 2 rivers young. If it doesn't work out you can always go back to your neighborhood school.

I just accepted PK4 at TRY for the same reason.

Next year we're guaranteed our ever-improving IB so if it doesn't work out we can always go back to where we were.

I'd stick with your neighborhood school that is ever-improving. I think that more people should look to invest in their neighborhood schools rather than jumping to a Charter School. If people don't invest in their neighborhood schools, how are they ever going to improve? Why on earth would you want to drive 10-12 (most likely with absolutely no traffic, so I would anticipate more like 30 minutes each way) than walk 5 minutes? People talk about investing in local products...your inbounds school is one of the best ways to improve your community. If it comes down to economics for you, your house value will only improve as your neighborhood school improves.

My commute to the charter will take less time than walking to my IB, and I can continue to invest in my neighborhood school. I started volunteering there before my child even attended (for the reasons you mentioned) and I'll continue to do so even after switching.

If it turns out that the charter isn't the better fit for my kid that I expect it to be, I'll still be involved enough at the IB to know if switching back there will improve things.

While I don't know where OP is coming from, I don't think the traffic situation is necessarily as bad as you suggest. We go to TRY. Our drive is about 15 minutes from our house near Union Station on a weekday -- only a few minutes more than it is on a weekend/holiday -- the fastest we can get there is like 10-12 minutes. H Street and Maryland Ave, while both commuting routes, can be crowded but move well in general, and there are many bailout/alternative routes.

FWIW OP, we adore TRY. I would recommend it wholeheartedly.

What's the drop off been like this year? Are you able to get close to the school or do you park a few blocks away and walk?

I'm thinking we'll bike or streetcar as much as possible but I know there are going to be driving days.

How are the Music/ Spanish/ Dramatics specials? We have been especially pleased with the quality of specials that our child got at our IB school...
What stands out to you most about TRY? Anything you would change?

OP do you want the TRY curriculum or are you happy with the one at your IB school. Are you happy staying at your IB through 5th or are you looking for a longer path.

Those are the questions you need to focus on.

My son is at PK4 at TRY. specials (music/Spanish/dramatics) are great, in my opinion.
We also recommend it wholeheartedly.

Give your inbound school a chance, especially if you've been pleased with it (teachers, administration, specials, etc). I have absolutely nothing against TRY, but I do think that people give up way too quickly on investing in their IB school.
