Liberal Elite

Anonymous
This jab is so tired. I get it. Trump won. However, it's as though when someone says "You see? This win happened because people got tired of being talked down to, or called stupid, by the coastal liberal elite. This vote shows what America is all about."

That statement is depressing. It actually underscores that whoever would vote that way, or feel that way, is insecure and smug about holding backwards values. These values are worthy of criticism. Betsy Devos is going to upend student loan repayment, net neutrality is in jeopardy, Jeff Sessions has reefer madness, Trump's close advisor, who donated 1m to his campaign, is vying to stop a report from seeing the light of day on how three pesticides cause immense damage to babies.

If you are against "elitists", then what do you represent? It seems like idiocy.

Many of Trump's supporters (could be half?) and certainly beneficiaries are the financial elite (but not intellectual elite).

You just can't control that liberal, holier-than-thou superiority even when you're trying to demonstrate it's not true.

Yes, after decades of persistence, the whole " my ignorance is as valuable as your knowledge " campaign is having its greatest victory. Depressing for sure.

....and yet, more liberal elitism. Seems like the snobs actually take pride in their arrogance.

So in other words, they became the financial elite just through luck? Intelligence, education, and motivation had nothing to do with?

These forums are filled with people that make judgement calls on your worth as a person based on your education level. If you didn't go to the right grad school, your are worthless. Look at all the bickering on which school is best, how to get into IVY, gifted programs etc. And these "well educated" people tend to be liberal. They do not even listen to other opinions, they ridicule anyone that disagrees with their "well educated" opinion.

but it is good that some of the liberal elite remember that Clinton and the liberal elites lost in november. after the liberal media, NYT and WP, with their ivy league writers, predicated a 98% chance that Clinton would win.

What would you say your point is? Do you appreciate the glorification of the less well educated? You'd let a "good natured all American country boy" be your surgeon over someone who went to medical school just to prove a point? Why are we supposed to value a president raised with a silver spoon who has no experience in government? Why do you mock intelligence? Are you insecure? We should be elevating capable people and not rubes.

I may not be brain surgeon, but I have three degrees that have helped me in my career. My career as an educator, however, is not valued - especially if you weed through the posts on this site.

However, despite my degrees, I come from a family of tradespeople trained in fields where I would flop. So having said that, while my own father would not have made a good brain surgeon, the brain surgeon couldn't put two bricks together to build a home.

So your elitism is indeed showing, as being educated can be defined in many ways. Sadly, it's all about the ivy-educated folks who couldn't change a tire if their lives depended on it.

Is that a good enough answer for you, Mr./Ms. Poster Child for Security?

I almost thought the OP was joking at first.

No one is frowning upon trades people. No one has a problem with someone not being an expert in economics- we have a problem with proudly, willfully ignorant people demanding their beliefs be respected and valued.

I agree. When I was job-hunting in recent years, I found the only people who gave weight to which college I attended (in the 1980s) were liberals. Conservatives were not snobby about that tyoe of thing and gave much more credence to my professional accomplishments.

Sadly, it's not. I think it's great you're a teacher and your family is in the trades. No one said it wasn't. The point of this thread was to inquire why there is a large body of people maligning intelligence by calling educated folks elite. It is intelligent to staff government agencies with people who have government experience. You can't run a country like a business. It is intelligent not to allow coal companies to once again dump their tailing in streams. It is intelligent to not defund public school. It is intelligent not to teach abstinence education only. It is intelligent to not head hud with a guy who is a surgeon with no experience and who believes pyramids were grain silos. It is intelligent to pursue renewable energy and not coal. It is intelligent to understand that the earth is older than 10000 years and that "teaching the controversy" only makes students dumber.
