Rejected from Chicago, Northwestern, Williams, Vanderbilt...

Ivy Day isn't going to go so well for my DD, is it? She didn't apply to any safeties. Only Ivies and Duke remain.

Prepare her to take a gap year. What is her anticipated field of study? Why no safeties?

I suppose NW and Vandy were supposed to be safeties? If so, you (and/or your DD's guidance counselor) badly miscalculated.

Can a gap year help you re-apply to college? I thought gap year was (typically) when you get in somewhere and you just defer for a year. If she re-applied this fall, her stats won't be any different ... aside from a couple AP scores, I guess. I'm not sure what she could do to make herself more marketable in the next six months.

She would be applying to the safeties, presumably.

What about a junior college/city college? I started out there, transferred to a four year, and ended up at Harvard Law School. It's not the end of the world.

She had to retake standardized test in December, which was her finest score, by far. So she didn't apply early anywhere. I don't think she would have been competitive with her earlier score anyways, so it was a tricky spot to be in.

Congratulations. You really know how to kick someone when she's down.

You can get into safeties with a phone call.

Wow op... DC didn't know about importance of safeties?

Some schools have rolling admissions. She better do it quickly.

How tough -but sounds like she must be a strong candidate so don't give up hope until all the decisions are in. If the worst has happened I would talk to your counselor and also check out college confidential and look for strategies for kids that are "shut out" from top schools. You may get some ideas. Good luck with this last round of decisions.

There are some pretty decent/respectable schools on this list with April (UIowa, Oklahoma, College of Charleston, New College of Florida, University of Utah) deadlines and May deadlines (Clemson, IUPUI, U of Arizona) even July.. (Iowa State, Duquesne, UT-Dallas, Elmhurst College, SUNY at Purchase) and August (Belmont, Texas Tech, U of Arkansas, U of North Texas, U of Wyoming, Otterbein, U of Louisville)...plus others.

This is actually super helpful both to the OP and anyone else in a similar spot.
