I just got a pint of blueberries and one of them has a bit of mold on them. I usually throw the whole container out when I find this, but I'm really craving some blueberries. Is it safe to eat the others? |
do you end up throwing out many containers of blueberries? I have yet to get one WITHOUT one bad berry. |
You actually throw out the ENTIRE container?!!!
All you have to do it throw out the moldy one and rinse the rest. |
I once sure a documentary that said if there is something with mold in the fridge, you need to throw the whole contents of the fridge away! Something about the particles being air-borne. Needless to say, I don't do that, but the show did encourage me to throw out the remaining strawberries I usually have after mold starts. |
Yeah, white scrungy mold really weirds me out. |
Probably 2 or 3 a summer. I get them twice weekly at least. I don't mind other types of bad berries, but not mold. |
What a waste to throw the whole container out. That's just ridiculous. Just rinse the rest well and enjoy. |
It's not a waste, though. If I'm not going to like them, why force myself to eat them? |
I'm really freaked out by mold, too. I worry, though, about where the heck the mold is before it shows up on our food. It's sort of -- where exactly? In the air? Waiting to land? Already on the food, waiting for conditions to be perfect?
If I find any mold on a piece of bread i throw out the whole loaf of bread, but I would only pick out the few blueberries around the moldy one, throw them out and wash the rest. |
If this is your attitude why bother posting? You've obviously answered your own question. |
Oh for God's sake, I wanted to know if it was harmful or otherwise spoiling to have mold on one blueberry. I was open to eating them if it wasn't harmful. In fact, I did eat the blueberries tonight and they tasted awful. Like grass almost. Very weird. Never again. |
How trivial |
Did you get them at Whole Foods? I bought about four containers of them there when they were on sale recently and they had no flavor whatsoever, and tasted a bit like grass (but had no mold). They were really disappointing, the blueberry equivalents of store-bought tomatoes i guess. |
Moldy Blueberries. What happens if there is a white mold on the blueberries. It is probably too late. Blueberries are grown in nature and there are yeasts and molds that naturally occur in the environment. Blueberries that you purchase should be free from molds when you buy them and for a reasonable amount of time after you store them in the fridge. If they are moldy right away, take them back to the place where you purchased to discuss refund policy. You can wash them off and eat them, but from my experience there will still be an off taste. The molds are not harmful but not good tasting! Typically -- if there is mold on the surface this is just the tip of the iceberg! All we can say is sorry about that! It happens when you are dealing with a natural product like blueberries!
