Swine Flu

Anonymous
Our son is about to begin preschool in the fall, and we are a bit concerned given all the information in the news about the expectations for swine flu also in the fall. Has anyone considered delaying preschool because of this?

Does your child have any health conditions like asthma? If so I might consider the delay and/or the (swine) flu shot for him.

My DC is in day care so we have no choice, but he'll be getting both flu shots this fall.

I'm definitely nervous. We have a 2 1/2 year old who had two colds that caused asthmatic reactions last March/April. We are now seeing a pediatric pulmonologist so I feel much better that DS will have a top dr on the case if he does get sick.

I've been reading a lot about the swine flu vaccine, and if the pulmonologist wants him to get it, we'll go for it. He's been getting regular flu shots since he was 6 months old.

We'll still be sending him to a 2x wk (4 hr week) program. I can't imagine keeping him home all winter long and never seeing another kid.

And, I might add, our kiddos could pick up swine flu just as easily from a quick trip to the supermarket or germs that a parent brings home from work.

Still, I agree that this is a very scary time to have a little one.

My son's the same age and has had several incidents of wheezing due to colds. He just had one caused by a food allergy, unfortunately, so we are about to see a pediatric allergist. But his pedi mentioned a pulmonologist as well. Do you like yours? Would you recommend him/her? I'm trying to get a handle on whatever's going on with DC's asthma/eczema/now food allergy mix. I hadn't been too worried about his asthma, and figured (still figure) he'd outgrow it, but this swine flu thing is pretty disconcerting.

I think you will be OK. You child will be exposed to these things everywhere.

Not sure where you're located, but we're seeing Dr. Osborn at the Pediatric Lung Center in Fairfax. It's a top-notch facility and we've been very pleased so far. They also have allergists as well. If it's convenient for you, I think it would be great to have two doctors under the same roof in consultation for your son's various issues.

There has been more in the news. I don't know if they are trying to sensationalize it or not.
