I haven't heard the phrase "oh snap" since I was a kid. My kid just came home saying this (in a very snotty tone). Is it generally a rude phrase, or is it just grating on me because of how he's saying it?

It's not rude at all. It's just slang for "Wow--I just remembered something important!"

I think it's cute and funny. No, I wouldn't let my kids say it to another adult but this particular one isn't a hill I would die on.
