Cost for a heavy up - standard DC rowhouse

Anonymous
We just got an estimate for a heavy up (125 to 200 amps) for our typical 3 bedroom DC rowhouse for $3,000 from Wilcox Electric. Does this seem like standard pricing for a heavy up? Any feedback on Wilcox specifically? Thanks in advance!

Yup seems fair. We had a super shady, off craigslist guy do this on our 3 bed row house 15 years ago and he charged $2500, which was market back then. So $3000 for a reputable company sounds good! (we were first time homeowners and the internet was in its infancy - hence our bad decision)

Call around. It really depends on the work involved. We paid $2000 and that is what I know most people paid but it was a minimal job and we ended up having to redo a lot of it as they left the old panel and it was a hot mess.

Sounds like a fair price.

When we were in Arlington we used Volta Electric as our electrician because they came recommended from a neighborhood listserv. I don't know if the price will be lower, but we trust them and used them for two other projects. BTW - we solicited three quotes before deciding on who would perform the heavy-up at our home. We didn't choose the cheapest.

I work in construction. 2500-3500 is a good price range. The estimate will be based on multiple factors that aren't obvious to the layman. Electricity and Gas are the two areas of the home that are critical in regards to hiring professionals. Wilcox is on a list of companies that I have used in the past for projects that met or exceeded expectations.

I use Wilcox at my home and like them. I had them replace my electric panel box. I had to have their work inspected for a C.O. and lo' and behold there were some minor issues the city inspector found and Wilcox had to follow up on. Without needing the C.O. inspection I probably never would have actually called the inspector at completion like you're supposed to do for projects like this when a permit is pulled. It was a good reminder that even the good guys make mistakes sometimes. So, I'm not cautioning you against using Wilcox at all, but definitely urging you to make sure you do the follow-up to have the city inspector come out to review the work done.

Thanks all! They're also recommending a surge arrester for an extra $185. Thoughts on that? Good idea or unnecessary?

surge protection for 185 sounds reasonable I'm an electrician and apparently too cheap on heavy up's

Sounds fair, we used Wilcox for the same thing, plus some additional work. Recommend them and will use them again. I felt they were fair and professional
