PWCS Schools are open on Inauguration Day.

I emailed my School board Member Ms.Williams ... Said sHe don't think they have any plans on closeing schools that day. I asked her why they were open on 1-20-09 or 1-20-13.
She said its was different.... Because 1-20-13 fail on MLK holiday and 1-20-09 WAS a once in a lifetime event, and a lot of students were going to be absent. She said Students would be marked as EXCUSED absent if the parents call in. My question is why can't they closed the school down? If Hillary would of won I am sure schoool would of been closed that day. I know the wonderful Liberal teachers at my DS school will not be showing that Inauguration because they want to teach.,.... Is this fair?

Should the Prince William County School Board close schools for students on Inauguration Day? Please take 30 seconds to complete this survey and share it with your friends:
http://survey.sogosurvey.com/survey.aspx…
History:
In December 2008, after Barack Obama was elected but before he took the oath of office, the Prince William County School Board voted 5-3 (Yes: Covington, Lattin, Lucas, Otaigbe, Ramirez. No: Johns, Richardson, Trenum) to close schools on Inauguration Day and open them on President's Day beginning in January 2009 and all future Inauguration Days.
In 2013, Inauguration Day fell on a Sunday so the calendar didn't need to be changed.
In December 2015, at the final school board meeting of their term, the previous school board discussed closing on Inauguration Day but ultimately voted unanimously to keep schools open on Inauguration Day, which was 13 months away.
The current school board can change the calendar if it so chooses.
Things to consider:
We essentially have three options:
1) Keep the calendar as is
2) Close on Inauguration Day but use a "snow day" and still remain closed on President's Day.
3) Close on Inauguration Day by trading out President's Day for Inauguration Day as described in the motion from 2008.
Keeping the calendar as it currently stands is less disruptive but does force those who want to attend or watch Inauguration Day to miss school/work.
Closing on Inauguration Day by using a "snow day" is a risk. We could have a winter where we need to add the to calendar and the school day like we did two years ago or we could have a winter with a few extra unused snow days like we did last year. The bigger issue with closing on a day that wasn't planned is what it does to lower income families who haven't budgeted for the extra day of daycare. It isn't easy to find the extra money for more day care or a family member to fill that role. Many families will be forced to take the day off of work and use vacation days when they weren't intending to use it. This disproportionally impacts lower income families especially those who are paid hourly. On a normal snow day fewer families are impacted because the adverse road conditions wouldn't allow parents to get to work anyway.
Trading out President's Day for Inauguration Day is neutral on class time but it does force those who have plans for the President's Day holiday to possibly change their plans or even miss school because of the unforeseen change to the calendar. It also has negative consequences on lower income families as mentioned previously.
Future years:
If this school board votes on the 2020-21 school calendar I would likely support swapping out Inauguration Day for President's Day but at least it would be done well ahead of time so families could plan. Doing so late, like it or not, has unintended consequences.
In conclusion:
The school board could discuss this issue. What do you think? Please click on the link to give your opinion on this informal survey. Comments below will not count towards the vote total. Please feel free to share this survey with your friends.

The school board did discuss it.
They voted on it.
The decision was to keep schools open.

I am not sure what changed that you think they need to reconsider their decision.

1. Proper English grammar: If Hillary HAD won....

2. The school board previously decided to close school for the inauguration of the country's first black president, a historic occasion. Probably, they anticipated that a large number of students and teachers would be attending the inauguration.

3. Later, the SB decided to go back to the old practice of holding school on inauguration day. This decision had nothing to do with anyone's opinion of the president-elect, since no one knew who the president-elect was going to be.

4. You might be correct that, if Hillary had won the election, the SB would have decided to close school for the inauguration, since that too would have been historic event. However, that's not what happened. The inauguration of an old white man--not historic.

5. Is there reason to believe there will be vast numbers of students absent on inauguration day in 2017? Is there reason to fear the inauguration will create traffic problems in PWC? If the answer to both those questions is no, on what grounds should they close school?

6. If you want to take your child out of school on any day, you are free to do so. Just call the school and say your child will not be attending. You have already been given assurance that absence to attend the inauguration will be excused.

Fairfax County Schools are open too. I'm glad. I get a day off b/c I'm Fed.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to attend this inauguration with their children. Even typical uneventful inaugurations are freezing cold, dull affairs with lots of lines, waiting and not nearly enough bathrooms. This particular inauguration will have epic protesters. I guess it would be a good first amendment object lesson....

You are complaining about hypothetical teachers preferring to teach content rather than turning on the tv to show inauguration coverage?

No, they are not.

PW is much further away from the action than FCPS. I don't understand why you think it is in the best interest of the children of PWC to not be allowed to go to school. Very few of them will be going to the inauguration and there won't be much disruption due to traffic in PWC. Why shouldn't those kids be allowed to get an education on that day?

I live in PWC and I am glad that the schools are open. I get that day off and I'm going to be too drunk drowning my tears to watch my kids.

My son wants to go. I requested tickets. If we get tickets and there are epic protestors my son will be disgusted and see an example of how embarrassing it looks when children/adults throw tantrums when they don't get their way. Very educational. Donald Trump isn't boring, so I'll be happy if we go, but if not I'll watch it on tv.

Take a video and upload it to YouTube. You can monetize it and make some money. Lots of people are watching videos of liberals crying about the election.

King George III thought the EXACT same thing.

The Most Interesting Man in the World could be getting inaugurated and attending the inauguration would still be miserable. Never been to one?
