SPD and labor

Anonymous
I have SPD and am really worried about doing damage to my pelvis in labor. I was planning on an epidural originally and don't have a doula, haven't taken any birthing classes. I'm 37 weeks now so it's too late to hire someone/find a class, but I'm reading that an epidural isn't recommended for SPD because laboring on your back and with legs spread can make it worse. Anyone btdt?

Ok. Lots to say here. SPD thru three babies.

First, it's perfectly fine to get an epidural with SPD. I delivered vaginally with my second two and got epidurals both times. The key is making sure your nurses and doctors are aware of your SPD. Make sure you tell them you don't want your legs pushed too far back, that you don't want to counter-push against anything (did that with my second and it resulted in horrendous pain for weeks), and that you want help staying as centered and equalized as possible. Third delivery was a piece of cake, even with SPD, and did nothing beyond taking the precautions I mentioned above.

Second - don't let anyone tell you that you need a c-section. I did this with my first and the section was miserable, my recovery was miserable and I think it contributed to how bad my SPD was the second time around. It's just unnecessary.

Finally - have hope. My third pregnancy was the least difficult with SPD. It was less painful and so much less of an issue. So don't think it happens as bad every time.

I had spd with my Sept baby and had no issues during or post labor. No epi because my labor went too fast however. My OB did not view spd as something that has significant impact on delivery nor something that would result in any sort of injury. I dont know if that is the norm, but for me it was a non issue.

I think I just responded to your other post about labor prep. I had SPD with two pregnancies, much worse the 2nd time. I am 12 days out from my 2nd delivery and while my hips still feel a little loose when walking, I just sat cross legged on the floor to do puzzles with my toddler and got up on my own. I also can roll over in bed now without crying. I hope you also get relief after delivery. I didn't walk or do squats this pregnancy as much as I did to prepare for my first delivery in part because of my SPD pain and being afraid of doing damage.

I delivered both babies on my hands and knees. My midwife applied counter pressure to my perinium. The key thing got me the past week was figuring out that if I lay flat on my back and bring my heels towards my butt and then squeeze my knees together for 10-15 seconds that I can then temporarily roll over or sit up in bed with little pain.

I also had SPD with my second. I didn't have any pain meds during labor. It was not really any issue during labor and afterwords it improved considerably right away. I was back to normal within a few weeks.

SPD two out of three times (didn't have it the first time around) and labor was no issue whatsoever. All three times with no epidural.
