Sleeping in a car

No, republicans and democrats agree that people should not be sleeping in vehicles on residential streets. The difference between the two is that republicans cut funding for the social programs like Section 8 vouchers or mental health services, that might help people have a better option. Democrats are willing to pay more in taxes so people aren’t sleeping in ntheir streets. Republicans apparently just want them to sleep on someone else’s street. That’s the difference.

Op, I also would call the police and I’m someone who has volunteered with homeless populations over the past several decades.

In all seriousness, if we just increased taxes to cover all the social programs we ideally would like to provide, we'd have 100% tax rates.

I guess I'm the biggest a-hole here because I would have called police the first night they showed up.

But then, if I parked/lived in a vehicle in front of someone's home I wouldn't be littering and would have a potty plan that includes an actual toilet, so I don't have much sympathy for someone causing this damage/mess/smell.

I don't believe for a second that the posters here would let this happen in front of their homes- and you, OP, what is your deal? Why is this only a problem now? What neighbourhood do you live in that you and your neighbours have all looked the other way for so long and you are all equally...erm... 'open-minded'?

-apparent hypocrite liberal in CCDC whose neighbourhood would have donated clothes, had the fundraiser, called the police and given a new RV to these people and sent them on their damn way.

If you're so concerned, I'm sure OP would gladly connect you with them and I'm sure they would gladly crash in your house. That cool? No? Weird...

no she should be worried. The few instances I have seen this my neighborhood I have called the police. these are likely drug overdoses from heorin or opioids. when people need that kind of fix, they do it immediately in their car.

Have you called the police? What did they do?

Exactly. Well said!

If you have been volunteering with the homeless for decades, you know that homelessness and related problems were caused by liberals who insisted on deinstitutionalizing the mentally ill.

Me too pp. I would have called police the first night. They need to move to an area not in front of someones house. Walmart allows people to park their vehicles there overnight for free.

No one in their right mind would let this happen in front of their house, or on their street. Good luck trying to sell a home in OP's neighborhood.

I would call police and code enforcement to see what could be done.

OP here. I called 311 and they said there is no city regulation against this. They said I should call the police station if I am concerned about safety. I live on a block where all the neighbors (including me) are hesitant to make it more difficult for someone who is clearly less fortunate than us (we have had multiple discussions about this). I have been hesitant to call the police as it looks like they have not done anything illegal. I do think though, if I were in this situation, I may have moved around (and I do acknowledge that I can never really put myself in their shoes). The reason I have waited this long to do anything about this is that expectation- but I am thinking this may never happen (I am not even sure if the van can move at this point). I may call the station and ask for advice from the police without filing a complaint. thanks for your input.

OP here again. I called the police station to ask if there is a law against this in DC - they said no. Apparently, I can call 911 but they will not do anything about it as its not my private property.

It must be nice to view the world in such simple terms. I kind of envy conservatives for that.

So, OP is supposed to be more concerned about the strangers in the car than for her family?

I'm a parent with little kids. They come first regardless of how much my heart bleeds for others who aren't as fortunate. But PP this is really throwing judgment on someone when you aren't in their shoes.

Right. The only difference between a bleeding heart liberal and a trumpster deplorable is hypocrisy.

ok if you say so
