Also remember,

“C’s” earn degrees !

Hahaha right. But not from good colleges.

You must have a warped, narrow view of what a good college is.

This. It is what private school parents say as one justification for their choice to go private

What does this mean ?

This was in reference to the scenario featuring two kids with different GPA where the kid with the lower GPA was taking more rigorous classes that the kid with all As. At UVA admit sessions, they say they want high grades AND rigorous classes, not one of the other.

DD waitlisted at UVA and W&M -- had 1 C+ in 9th grade and a handful of B/B+ grades as well. She did have some medical issues that affected a few grades, but she didn't mention them in her essays. 9 AP classes, including AP Latin and Calc AB in 11th. No AP science, just honors. 33 ACT. Excellent variety of extracurriculars and recommendations. Essay was true to who she was, connected to her desired major, and beautifully written. (I only read it after submission.)

Agree. My kid is at a rigorous public and there is no such thing as retakes even if you fail a test or quiz.

Exactly

At least two Bs and a B- (summer school course) in academic subjects. High rigor in stem even though kid applied with a non-stem major.

Multiple Bs in non academic courses, where teachers just didn't give A's for some reason.

DC Public School. Barely top 25% of class. Very strong EC, but not recruitable. Got into a T10. Lots of interesting acceptances and rejections to go with it. It really is a lottery, with essays on why you should be the winner.

3 B+'s, none after 10th. UChicago ED

Well, yes, but UVA still has test optional. It is a "AND" for boring entitled white kids like mine applying, but it's not an "and" for URM and first generation, etc.

I know a handful of students that get into T20s with a bunch of B’s but their essays or extracurriculars are usually stellar. Easy to stretch the truth on those though…

1 - B in AP Calc AB (but got A in BC Calc the next year) in at Stanford (REA), UVA and Vanderbilt. Didn't apply anywhere else. FCPS (not TJ)

If your child was accepted into a highly selective college, how many Bs did they have?
If you don't mind, could you name the school?

I know this is a silly question as admissions is holistic, but trying to gauge which schools we should target early decision/early action. There are differing opinions in our family!

Zero (A- in 7th grade algebra and Spanish 4-FCPS)
Waitlisted at UVA and NEU
Denied H and Penn
Accepted at BU, CWRU, Lehigh, UMD, WM, Pitt, Ohio St and UMN

Wow!

Without information re: rigor and test scores, this is almost meaningless.

A lot less competition in the DC public schools.
