Where are TJ kids going?

Take that, all of you people who say Virginia has better in-state options for college.

All that means is that VT developed a reputation as a safety school at TJ and Maryland became “the road less taken.” If enough TJ kids in the bottom half of the class ended up at UMCP, people at TJ would start looking down on Maryland, too.

One disgruntled troll whose kid didn’t get into VT does not speak for everyone else at TJ. Too funny.

Haha kinda true! On a related note, my wife’s team at work had a summer intern from TJ and she was blown away by the high quality / highly technical work by the girl from TJ (the interns presented their work at the end of the summer). Everyone was clamoring to have her join their team.

I had an intern from TJ, got into T20 school, not blown away by any means, really, nothing brilliant, typical teenager, high achiever and with helicopter parents that push them, tutor them, connect them

Ok. You have to understand that not every intern from TJ is going to blow you away but the percentage of interns who pick up easily and do an above-average job is higher.

MANY go out of state to schools like Pitt, Purdue, Boston U etc. These places really like TJ kids and as you mention bottom half in TJ is still a highly qualified applicant.

The issue only is for in-state where UVA, VT and W&M will accept only a limited number of TJ kids. But if the student is willing to go OOS, the TJ brand opens up many places. My DC was a 4.1, 1500+, avg EC's kid. Got rejected from UVA, VT. But got in at UIUC, which actually has a better engineering program that either UVa or VT

We are also considering UIUC. Could you please share any info on travel wise how difficult it is get there from NOVA region. It seems like it would be difficult to travel as it needs flight + bus/car each leg.

DC has a car. So its a 2/3 hr drive to Indianapolis/Chicago O Hare (fares are cheaper ~190 RT) and then a direct flight to IAD. Definitely not very convenient but quite manageable and fun for DC as usually there is a group of friends travelling to get to the airport.

UIUC is great program ( DC is in electrical engineering) and the travel hassles are not an issue at all - we just accepted it as part of the deal of studying at UIUC

Do TJ kids consider GA Tech?

The bottom half cannot get into uva anymore. The above answer is simply incorrect. Only 90 or so kids out of 380+ kids got into uva last year. VT is getting harder to get into. UNC and Texas are always hard.

GA Tech is popular at TJ. But not an easy admit.

It can also be more expensive than other options.
