The Stuy kids will not be a surprise it will usually be some USAMO level kids.

Beyond that.

+1. Lots of USAMO qualifiers and not enough spots. Probably need to be a MOPper or USAMO silver/bronze plus all the other things (GPA/rigor/SAT/ and strong ECs) for the STEM kids.

Is that true for applicants who are not Asian males?

That's probably correct -- not too many non-Asian male USAMO qualifiers and even fewer such MOPpers.

TJ is apparently the biggest feeder nationwide to MIT. Probably in part because it is a big school. 500 per class.

500 kids per class at TJ. I think it averages 4-5 MIT admits per year. They had several this year but ED not sure about RD.

I know a kid recruited for basketball. I would imagine even at MIT, men's basketball and football likely operates differently from other sports.

Yes, the coach does a pre-read and basically says don't waste anyone's time if you don't have high SATs, top grades, etc. However, even MIT doesn't care if you don't do much else except play basketball. You don't need to win math contests or any of that.

Coach told this kid that he nominates 6 for acceptance, and on average 4 are accepted each year. So, clearly if you are truly getting recruited such that you apply to MIT EA, your odds of acceptance are dramatically higher than the general populace.

The coach's big pet peeve is they wish MIT was ED vs. EA. A number of times a coach loses a recruit to an Ivy (who may not even be recruited or be a starter for an Ivy team) because the recruit is not required to accept MIT admission and they figure...let's see how other acceptances look.

Same. They could use this thread as the entrance exam

Athletic recruit.

To MIT? LOL.

Not sure what the joke is. They definitely recruit for athletics. Prereads, etc.

EA maybe, MIT has no ED

My husband went to MIT and he’d be the first to say admissions today is nothing like 25 years ago. Admissions rate was like 30%! Who could pay mattered.

I know of a kid who was admitted to MIT due to DEI. Terrible at math, but a tech major.

So doubtful - for so many reasons, including that they are not TO.

I heard that they buy high sat scores from lower income areas m/high minority areas to market to them to help DEI. Sound about right - I know other schools do that.
