My daughter is the only white girl in her grade: ask me anything

Anonymous
I read the demographic thread, and there is a lot of concern about sending a white child to a school where it is likely that that child will be the only white child in their class/grade/school. What I didn't see on the other thread were posts from many people whose children had actually been the "only" in their class. I have done this, and I'm happy to answer questions about it, since there was concern.

First grade. PK4 and K she was also the only.

How does your SES compare to those of her classmates?

Is she aware that she is "different"?

Usually, people here say they're seeking diversity. Is that not something you value?

Come back and post when she is in fifth grade and you have pulled her out of that school.

Do other kids pick on your DD because she is white?

Higher. We are listed as 99% FARM but the actual numbers are probably around 70%. Our HHI is about $150K.

Thanks. I will. And thanks for implying that my experiences and hers thus far are invalid.

Are you happy with your decision/choice? Is your DD?

Does this cause any problems?

Sometimes. She is aware that she does not speak Spanish like many of her friends. She also knows that she has different hair. Other than that, no.

Sure, I value diversity. It wasn't my top criterion for finding a school for DD. We are at our neighborhood school, which was ultimately more important to me than having other white kids in her class.

Not as far as she's reported to me. She gets picked on sometimes, and we deal with that as it comes. She has never mentioned it being related to race.
