Can cervix check induce labor?

Anonymous
40 weeks tomorrow and saw my dr today. She said cervix was still closed and to expect some spotting afterwards, which I've had all afternoon. Just talking with a friend and she said checking your cervix can make you go into labor sometimes. Is this true?

Rarely it could pop your water. Your friend is probably talking about a cervical sweep though.

Do you know if she swept your membranes or just did a simple cervix check? If you're spotting, she may have swept your membranes and I read that 50% of women go into labor within the next day or so after that "procedure" (I was not one of the lucky ones to go into labor after having my membranes swept at 40 weeks...) Have you noticed any of your plug when you wipe, or just spotting?

Good luck! I know these last few days are unbearable!!

Would I know if she swept the membranes? She didn't say anything about it. I haven't noticed anything mucousy, just spotting. I've only had two cervix checks, one last week and one today, and the one last week did not hurt at all. This one was definitely more uncomfortable although I wouldn't call it painful.

She might have stripped hour membranes. Did it hurt?
You probably have another week. Sorry.

I was zero dilated and zero effaced at 39+3 and my OB said I would go overdue. I went into labor that night. You just never know.

OP here, I wasn't spotting until after the check. Would I know if she swept my membranes?

It usually hurts. And no good doctor would do it without telling you because it isn't without risk.

Spotting could be just from touching or irritating the cervix as well. Not uncommon.

I'm at GW, which I consider reputable, so I assume she would have told me if she was sweeping the membranes. I dont' want to do anything to induce labor at this point (39 w 6 d, prefer to let labor happen on its own), so this makes me feel better. Thanks!

Sometimes they sneaky strip. I'd be surprised by that at GW tho.

I declined the cervical check for several appointments in a row, because I was concerned about it triggering contractions (my first baby arrived early at 36 weeks, did not want to mess around with anything that could increase that possibility again), and my OB was supportive of that call. She acknowledged it could, indeed, aggravate things enough to jumpstart contractions.

OP again. I haven't had any cramping or contractions since the check today and spotting seems to have stopped.
