Particularly interested in hearing from parents of children with scores of 140 or above (what is sometimes termed "exceptionally" or "profoundly" gifted):
Where is your child in school? Is the school meeting your child's needs? Were they able to meet your child's needs through their regular curricula materials or through differentiated attention? If differentiated education was necessary, was the school helpful and/or gracious about it or was it a struggle? Is your child happy there? Is your child able to balance all the different areas of development (social, emotional, physical, etc. - as well as intellectual) at the school? Thank you so much for your feedback. |
My kid is happy at Beauvoir and has an IQ above 140, according to WPPSI. |
GDS -- generally quite happy. Lots of assignments that are what you make of them. So the kid differentiates by taking on something more ambitious than what's required or expected. Generally (but we've had a few exceptions), the teacher meets them where they are and offers a next step. When that hasn't been the case, there's been no conflict. Just affirmation -- but no next step or helpful critical feedback.
That said, it may be a better school for self-motivated kids than for kids who respond best to competition/challenges. |
OP, get lost. |
Chevy Chase Elementary School in Montgomery County in the Highly Gifted Center. No complaints. No need for additional differentiation due to the way curriculum is already taught. Child and parents all very happy. |
Homeschool. |
WPPSI score high 140s, DC working several grade levels ahead; is in a private school not GDS/Beauvoir/Sidwell. (Sorry, don't want to identify ourselves more than that.) Very happy there; the school is differentiating and was very gracious and helpful about doing so. (The regular curriculum would not have worked.) Child and parents very happy. We hope to move to the MoCo Highly Gifted Center for 4th grade.

Fwiw, I know that the title of this thread sounds obnoxious - and I apologize for that. I wanted to grab the attention of parents from whom I am seeking information and tried a few different ways of phrasing it that simply didn't fit in the title line. I wasn't looking for feedback about simply very smart children - but rather children who consistently perform at least two grade levels or years ahead of their peers as is common with children who score at these levels (and for whom traditional educational environments are often not sufficient). So, thank you to all who are answering this thread - the information is very helpful. |
Sidwell, with similar results to the poster at GDS. In addition, DC was put into an accelerated math group beginning in 5th grade. |
Westminster School in Annandale |
OP,
How old is your child? |
A MoCo public elementary school. We talked with the principal at our school before enrolling and learned about modifications they were making for specific children needing acceleration beyond the norm. So far we're very satisfied that our sense of the school's flexibility was justified. |
CCES -- 3rd grade regular program was sufficiently differentiated for DC to not complain about school. For 4/5 we chose the CCES Highly Gifted Center, also as previous poster. |
Our DC's WIPPSI score was 146. DC is at St. Patrick's and loving it. It is certainly meeting DC's needs in every way. |
sorry for the typo...meant WPPSI |
