Accuracy of gender prediction with NIPT test

Anonymous
I have other children and didn't find out their gender before birth, but this will be our last and I think I would like to know.

Has anyone ever heard of the gender being wrong after being told following the NIPT blood test? One of the reasons I would never have found out with previous pregnancies is that I knew of at least 2 friends who were told the wrong sex at their 20 week ultrasound. But now I am over 35 and will have the NIPT test which sounds as though it gives a more definite answer.

I asked my OB this morning and she said she didn't know of anyone but she also reiterated that the test is 'screening' rather than diagnostic, so could in theory not prove correct.

I've never heard of it being wrong. Anecdotal, but so far 100%.

I know of one family where the ultrasoundist at 20 weeks said the NIPT was wrong... and it turned out the ultrasoundist was wrong. I think it's like 99.7% accurate for the chromosomal issues that it screens for including sex-linked ones, so I would assume similar accuracy.

It's a DNA test, so they look at whether XX or XY chromosomes. That's going to be as close to 100% as you can get.

If they see Ys, you can be pretty sure it's a boy.

If they don't see Ys, it's likely a girl, but could still be a boy.

OP, thanks all. Yes, it was the lack of Y that made me wonder whether the girl 'diagnosis' was less accurate.

How could it be a boy if there's no Ys?

I thought I read that if this is you had an earlier child that was a boy, there is a tiny chance of a false boy reading if the baby is actually a girl due to the earlier baby's DNA possibly remaining in your blood.

That said, anecdotally, I don't know of anyone who has been told the wrong sex from this test. (Sex not gender!!)

I've only heard of inaccuracies with twins. If they see a Y they know there is at least one boy but not about the other.

My OB said specifically that It would be highly unlikely that you'd have fetal DNA still circulating in your bloodstream during a subsequent pregnancy.

The test potentially just didn't pick up the Ys but they could be there. This could happen if they don't get enough fetal DNA to test, but I think even still this is unlikely. It's a very accurate test and they know the best window to draw the blood.

I think this is actually more likely to happen if you had a MC shortly before conceiving or if you lost a twin (that you maybe never even knew about).

Its accurate. Besides, you'll get the NIPT, then have the 20 week sono which will confirm, then have weekly ultrasounds beginning at 36 weeks which will confirm. You'll be certain.

Please be aware of EASY DNA - HOME DNA gender test. They cheat people. Accuracy is not 98%. They have many wrong result send and always copy one answer that you are in those 2 % that are strange.

Plese dont waste your money!

It's very accurate. Much more so than a grainy look between the legs which is when they get it wrong.

However, on both of my anatomy ultrasounds, we got VERY clear shots of the genitals. It was 100% clear we were having a girl and 100% clear when it was a boy. Now, that's not always the case, but even with an untrained eye the pictures were very obvious.
