Rudeness on Kojo Nnamdi: Arlington edition

Anonymous
This afternoon Kojo Nnamdi hosted a program discussing the political situation. The invited guests were ArlNow editor Scott Brodbeck, and NotLarrySabato blogger and political consultant Ben Tribbett. THEY WERE THE GUESTS. Not Libby Garvey, Chair of the Arlington County Board. And certainly not interloper Erik Gutshall, her self-appointed challenger.

Garvey respected the cultural and societal rules. Not Gutshall. He actually called in when he didn't agree with the guests' description of Arlington.

It was utterly rude and gutless for Gutshall to hijack the Kojo Nnandi show by calling in. Scott Brodbeck and Ben Tribbett expected to be pundits, and to discuss Arlington as they wished to define it. When you're serving as a guest on a public affairs show, you have the right to present the situation as you see fit. Listen here for Gutshall's tantrum.

In doing so, Gutshall was portrayed as supporting the streetcar's resurrection. I don't care that Gutshall doesn't say that publicly, or even privately for that matter. If you deign to criticize Libby and John on transportation, then a pundit has the right to portray you BY THE PUNDIT's DEFINITION as supporting and rehashing the streetcar. That's just smart politics, and let me tell you it's really effective to describe things that way when like me you're trying to convince die-hard Republican neighbors why they should come out and vote in a Democrat primary.

But no, Gutshall needs to be the center of attention. How embarrassing for Brodbeck and Tribbett to have Gutshall challenge their portrayal. That's simply uncalled for as it's completely off-script.

Furthermore, how DARE Gutshall then tweet that Tribbett has done paid polling work for Libby. That was not supposed to be discussed. Even Tribbett's past client Hope can recognize polling and punditry are completely separate.

Makes you wonder what's in a man who has the nerve to ambush guests on a public affairs radio program. The fact Gutshall was discussed is a red herring. It was rude for Gutshall to stick his nose where it doesn't belong. But then, running against our friend Libby is rude in the first place.

It probably feels cathartic to get that off ones chest. I for one applaud random internet rants.

Not sure I agree that a candidate should not call into a radio show. But then again I haven't listened, and I did not see a link.

That said, he seems to have sent out a pretty appalling negative mailer in the mail last week, accusing Garvey of chucking seniors under the bus. https://www.arlnow.com/2016/05/31/garvey-disputes-negative-gutshall-mailer/

I wonder how this went over at the debate tonight. My sense is that you can't win a seat on the Arlington Board in such a cutthroat way.

OP,

The DEFINITION of a radio call show is that anyone can join in the conversation and express his or her opinions, until the host shuts down the mike or hangs up the phone.

The whole PURPOSE of a radio station is to make money. Debates and arguments on radio generate a lot of listeners and comments (like yours, for example) and if they are done well, add to the station's notoriety and prestige. Not that Kojo wants a Howard Stern reputation, but sometimes he does allow political disputes like this because he knows what he's doing.

Try be a little more intelligent, OP.

Not to be pedantic but I'm not sure the mission of WAMU is to make money. Just sayin.'

Right. It's WAMU, a sedate NPR station. Not a place where you crash the soirée.

If Brodbeck and Tribbett had wanted to call Gutshall a WAR CRIMINAL, it's THEIR RIGHT to do so. They're the pundits. If Gutshall wanted to respond, he could tweet or maybe purchase time on the local equivalent of Pravda or RT. But he is not to be calling the Kojo show without an invitation!!! That is just RUDE!!!

Few things in life are as insignificant as a local Arlington election.

Uh, he had every right to call. It wasn't rude at all. You're insane.

OP, I promise you that you are literally the only person who feels this way. I promise you the host, the guests and the producers are all thrilled that he called in. What this adds up to is your viewpoint simply isn't valid.

Actually this is a very big deal election. Gutshall needs the council member job because he has failed at everything else he has tried. He is the new Walter Tejada.
If Garvey is re-elected, she and Vihstadt will continue to address issues related to schools and move away from the big push for affordable housing. It is almost a generational war between the people who have bought expensive real estate in Arlington since the turn of the century with the vision of a nice suburban way of living. Now their children are in overcrowded schools, including those recently expanded and renovated. On the other side are the hippies who bought cheap housing in Arlington in the 1970s, the more middle class who bought in the 1980s and 1990s who vaunt "The Arlington Way." Their kids are through the schools and they are sitting on fat nest eggs in their houses. They can afford to be compassionate because it really doesn't affect them. They also hate and resent the new more affluent younger people and want to get revenge by rubbing their faces in overcrowded schools and affordable housing.

This is one weird thread. Chair Garvey, I mean OP, is this your first time listening to Kojo? Local and aspiring pols call in ALL THE TIME. Do you know how many times I listen to Kojo on Friday and can nearly guess to the minute when CM X or Supervisor Y cal?s into the "DC Politics Hour" to challenge the narrative pushed by Sherwood, Kojo, or a nemesis on the show? EVERY FRIDAY.

Do you think Kojo's screeners would put through a call if they thought it was untoward? No. They were probably salivating when the guy called in.

It is not rude, it is politics.
