ANOTHER reported attempted abduction

What the hell!!!!

This came through a list-serv:

Tonight a neighbor of mine in Crestwood (NW DC) told the list serve that her 8 year old daughter was approached in the alley by an older white male with grey hair driving a white Acura MDX. (The car type was identified by my husband who saw the car and then it was confirmed by the girl who saw a photo of that model car) The car had tinted windows, we think. The man asked the girl to approach the car and offered her candy. She jumped on her bike and took off. Thank god.

PLUS the Smithsonian Air and Space Incident (https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/police-seek-man-in-abduction-attempt-at-smithsonians-air-and-space-museum/2016/03/23/b1b9b788-f112-11e5-85a6-2132cf446d0a_story.html), the incident that happened/didn't happen (http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/15/541169.page), someone filming kids at a charter school playground to be chased off by teachers (sorry - can't find the email that came through on)

Maybe I'm more attuned to it now, but seems like an awful lot of activity by folks with ill-intent toward kids. I can't imagine there's something in the water to help kids all invent these stories either.

I'm wondering why there was this flurry of info about this and then everyone seems to have forgotten there's a man in our community who actively wants to abduct children. How has he not been found yet with such a distinctive face? Sounds like this guy is new... or is he maybe the man who was with Bernard Drai at air & space?

This scares me senseless. Thank goodness the girl acted so quickly and got away.

Plus the man in a car following a middle schooler walking to or from Tilden MS on Old Georgetown Rd at the beginning of the school year. Was that a white car?

Plus a recent incident last week near the Bethesda Washington Waldorf school where a man in a car yelled at some kids to get into his car.

Plus an incident on our small Bethesda street where an unknown man followed the neighborhood kids playing and running on the sidewalk. Mothers came out in force as soon as they realized there was someone doing this and the man drove off in a car he had parked on the street. I was not there that day, neighbors described the situation to me when I came home.

I've a feeling some of these incidents are by the same person, and he needs to be caught pronto. Report ALL suspicious persons to the police - it might be the person they are looking for!

They were all on neighborhood and school listservs, not mentioned in the news as far as I know. I think there have been 4 since the fall, ranging in area from East Bethesda down to near Banockburn I think (the latest). Don't quote me about Banockburn but it was somewhere down there. All similar -- a guy in a car tries to get the kids to get in.

According to the police, there was no credible information that the report in Chevy Chase was about an attempted abduction.

Unless they mean that the story was fabricated by the boys or their mother, there should definitely be taking it seriously. Nobody in their right mind offers children a ride anywhere these days.

Also, there have been such a number of reported abductions in the area that they can't ALL be imaginary.

We had a similar event in our Northern VA neighborhood.

Good Afternoon,
We wanted to make you aware regarding an incident that occurred recently in the neighborhood near Rt. 7 and Fairfax County Parkway. There was a report of some suspicious activity regarding a Cooper Middle school 7th grader walking home from her bus stop. A black SUV followed her home. The driver was described as an older Caucasian woman with black curly hair.
A woman she did not know said to her, “Your mom asked me to bring you home.” When the girl said that she would rather walk, the woman said, “It’s very important.” The girl kept walking and the SUV drove away.
The School Resource Office (SRO) at Cooper has been monitoring the situation along with the Fairfax County Police. If you see something, please contact the Fairfax County Police at (703) 691-2131. We encourage all families to take precautions and to review with their children what they should do in case they are approached by a stranger.

This is such a sad state of affairs. I offered our neighbor's kids a ride home from school as I was picking up my kids, and we pass right by their house on the way home. Kids are older ES/MS age. They know us. But yea, now, I guess I won't ever do this again. But, it really is so sad that this is what it comes down to.

I teach my kids that no matter WHO it is, they're supposed to get my permission first. Keeps things simple.

Outside the elementary school.

Dear Parents,

In the interest of safety I want to alert you to an unusual circumstance which happened today. A man was seen by staff form the building on the sidewalk along Seaton Lane, and it seemed he may have been writing notes in a book or device. Our security went to approach a man who was then outside the fence near the back of the playground, and he appeared to be taking pictures; as our security approached, the man fled across the bridge on the foot trail. Police were called and a report was filed that staff witnessed this individual.
