Affirmative Action and Race Discussions Should Be Moved to Its Own Forum

Anonymous
I think Affirmative Action discussions should be moved out of college section. I come to read this Topic are "College" to get and provide information for admissions and college information and it seems like there are those who want to derail many discussions and talk about race and affirmative action. I think they need their own section to do this.

Jeff will be deleting EVERY.SINGLE.POST after page 2 I bet.

Are these things not a part of college admissions? Sorry that it doesn't fit into your round hole of what you define as college topic chatter, but it is a valid part of all college conversation, not just what you come here for. The same discussions happen on all of the selective school admissions forums.

It seems to me that there is a small group of people who complain about affirmative action on college threads, then keep complaining, then are POd because the thread isn't about college admissions.

Affirmative Action has become a simple reduction for people's anxiety about the college admissions process - as if the 4% African American undergraduate population at University of Michigan (lower still when you strip out the athletes attending the school for the sole purpose entertaining the fat-cat alumni on Saturday afternoons) is the reason why junior was denied by the school. It is the scapegoat and the vehicle through which manyl of the frustrations about the remote and seemingly arbitrary nature of the process are expressed. This will only get worse in the current political climate.

The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race - I believe a famous Bethesda resident once said that.

Do not dispute your right to your view. Would be nice to have a discussion about colleges without incessant diversions off topic about affirmative action which seems to be agenda driven.

It's not DCUM that created the discussion, it is the schools' admissions policies. When your 'hook' is something you were born with (race, gender, legacy status) versus something you have achieved (grades, awards, sports), then it will always offend those that are not born with a hook. Students can work harder, train more, do more volunteer work, etc., but they cannot change their race. To be judged on race, for or against, is really offensive.

It just devolves into constant ranting that is so unproductive.

I bet you have this diatribe in a Word document so that you can easily copy it into any discussion. Please help us to understand all of the other inequities in the world that you are working hard to correct (and there are more than a few out there) - or is it just your own ass that you are concerned about?

See? This idiot is a perfect example of why these discussions don't end up well. It's the same guy who says the same thing (even the insults) over and over. Talk about cut-and-paste!
