Why is Sibley bad?

Anonymous
Remind me why Sibley seems (in my impression) to get a bad rap? Is it the shared rooms, or c section rate? Is there something else? Considering my options, GW is out, so that leaves GT, WHC, and Sibley, really. But all the smaller/solo practices deliver at Sibley so it seems if I don't want a large hospital based practice it's Sibley. But I've got this vague "avoid at all costs" impression, without specifics behind it. Maybe it's a mis-impression?

shared rooms, and bad for high-risk. If your baby ends up needing a NICU, they will get sent to georgetown while the mother is stuck at sibley. If you don't care about paying for a private room (or care about sharing), and you are not at risk for needing a high-grade NICU, it's likely fine. But I'd hate to be in a different hospital than my kid.

I've had 3 babies & Sibley was by far my best experience (and Georgetown was one of the others). I had planned on a c-section but ended up with a vbac & Sibley was amazing. The post-partum care was superb. Also, that's not entirely accurate re sibley's special care nursery. The same neonatologists from Georgetown are the exact Drs at Sibley. My 31 week son at Georgetown he his initial physical from the same dr my daughter did at Sibley, and the dr is the head of Georgetown's NICU. My son stayed in Georgetown's NICU for a month, and we had several talks with the neo Drs re Sibley, as that is where we had planned on delivering. They all said that unless it was a super early delivery where you would be sent to Georgetown, it's rare to have something Sibley can't handle. In fact, they said you get more individual care bc the special care nursery is fully staffed but often empty whereas Georgetown is packed & each nurse is assigned 3 babies.

People have bad impression because of the cost of a private room and because it is not "the best NICU in the city." Re: the cost - there is nothing you can do and it is totally annoying that you have to pay for a private room, and it is so freaking expensive, but I loved my OB enough that I did not care about that. The L & D nurses were AMAZING and so were the post partum nurses. I really thought I got amazing care. They also had a nursery, and although I did not use it, it is a great option. There was also none of that stuff that happens with teaching hospitals - a million med students watching you deliver or an intern taking your vitals. It was very quiet and no one came to do a satisfaction survey at all. I did get one in the mail, though. My experience with the lactation people was so-so. I was less than impressed.

In regards to the NICU, my sister is a neonatologist at Children's and I was slightly high risk due to a blood clot disorder, but she had NO issue with me delivering at Sibley. Felt the care I would get, if needed, was excellent. My pediatrician does not round there, so daughter was seen by a Georgetown pediatrician.

I was more than satisfied with my experience. Insurance changed and I can't stay with my OB anymore for baby #2, but would have delivered at Sibley again with no issue, if I could.

I budgeted for the private room--a pain but it was important to me--and was very happy with my delivery at Sibley.

I have heard nothing but great things about Sibley with regards to everything other than not having Level 3 NICU (which probably 1% of us will need) and the private room cost (which I admit is ancient and a rip off). I am delivering at Sibley based on great feedback (delivered DC1 at Holy Cross). Am opting for shared room hoping for not having a roommate though. Postpartum nurses and having a nursery is more important to me.

For me, it was ~$400 a night for my own room. The NICU was an issue, but it was more about the money.

For me it was because I was willing and happy to pay for my own room but they were packed so I had to share. Never went back after that.

Did you end up needing a level 3 NICU?

I delivered at Sibley and had a great experience. I had a long, difficult labor but was at no point pressured into a C section and ended up delivering vaginally. I had excellent postpartum care. I didn't pay for a private room but did not have to share. I am looking forward to delivering there again.

Great experience delivering at Sibley last yr for a vaginal birth. We paid for the private room (would have been unhappy sharing a room) and loved the nurses and care. Also liked the breastfeeding/infant care class they offered before we went home.

No, thank goodness, but as I said above, it was more about the money.

Most people are not high risk and won't need a true NICU. I had two vaginally deliveries at Sibley, and I was very happy there.

+1 Sibley was perfectly fine, had a peaceful vaginal delivery there. I just didn't realize about the 400$/night private room surcharge for my first child, so for my second I will deliver elsewhere.

I had a great experience at Sibley. But it pissed me off that I had to pay for a private room so I went to WHC the next time.
