mixing styles: duncan phyfe table with more modern chairs?

Anonymous
So I have a duncan phyfe dining table. It wouldn't be my choice to buy now, but its what I have. I love that it goes from 66 inches long to 96 inches with the extension leaves. The main top has drop leaves, which when folded down make the table top just 30 or so inches "long." In this smallest format, it works great against the wall as a buffet. So useful!

This is about what the table looks like, although this one is kind of beaten up:

I'm updating my first floor with a more contemporary art gallery feel. I am looking for new dining chairs. Any ideas for what chairs could work with the old table, but look more modern/hip/eclectic than the expected matchy dark wood antique chairs? I appreciate any ideas!

Maybe parsons chairs?

Good idea, thank you! I will check out some parsons styles. Need to be easily cleanable, as my kids are still young.

Get the close-fitting slip covers for your parsons chairs so you can throw them in the wash as needed. I have the white ikea ones (because bleach is my friend), but there are nicer ones out there.

OP here. The second photo down on this page shows my table style with something like a parson's chair.

Love.

I think it will look great.

I actually think Duncan Phyfe style furniture works with virtually anything. The lines are so simple that the furniture can be paired with a variety of different things.

OP here. How about something like this. I would paint it a solid color, maybe black. I'm avoiding browns since the wood floors, wood table, and china cabinet are all shades of brown/wood. Wanting more "pop."

Yes I love it! We got modern wingback chairs for the ends and parsons chairs for the middle. It looks great in our young house.

My only issue is that because we have an antique table, we need table pads and a tablecloth to use it. Tablecloths just look so dated in my opinion.

OP here. I polyurethaned my vintage table top and it is now totally indestructible. Water doesn't penetrate the finish. We use trivets under hot pots, but I think any table requires that. Oil based poly - smelly going on and you need mineral spirits to clean up, but totally worth it.

I prefer parsons chairs. A softer and more modern look.

Those are cool looking, but I feel like I'd be self conscious about how my butt, back, thighs, etc looked through the clear chair. I'm not generally very self conscious, it just seems like it would look weird.
