Do you live next door?

This makes me kind of hate that neighbor who objects. II read the Post story, not this one.) 20 inches into the public space? Plus it's cute. Some people are just looking for something to get all het up about.

No. I do own a home in Georgetown with some of the very strictest historic protection rules and anything behind the façade is generally not a problem at all.

The neighbors rejected the 'castle theme' as not being in line with the neighborhood's historic nature. Again, it's the back of the house--not street view. Protection is usually only for a façade.

They notified neighbors prior to building it and nobody complained at the time. The husband repeatedly reached out to DCRA and DDOT to get the proper permit. DCRA confirms that tree houses - 50 square feet or smaller, located on private space - don't require a permit.

Do you live next door? Maybe you could offer the reason you want it torn down.

I agree. I have had total demolitions going around my home and rebuilds for the past 6 years since I have lived in my current home and I haven't objected to anything. A tree house would not raise my hackles---granted, I really, really like all of my neighbors so I wouldn't want to create strife and have to live next door for the next 20 years. It sounds to me like just some busy-body a-hole neighbors.

But taking public space is a no-no, regardless. GDS is trying to do that with its commercial project in Tenleytown.

It's cute, but i would actively fight this because it creeps into public space. Doesn't matter that it is "unusable" space. Think of all the stuff your neighbors could start putting up there that doesn't require a permit on private space but would be horrible on public space.

maybe they should focus on cleaning up the crime and horrible trash

I thought it was actually in the front yard?

Gentrification is a bitch!

It hangs over the alley. If others have something tall they need to move through there, they would be restricted from doing solely because of this tree house overhang. They should remove it, with an apology from DC for not thinking this through more carefully.

Those neighbors need to get a life.
