That's exactly how my hardworking URM student got the short end of the stick and was waitlisted instead of receiving an offer they truly deserve.

Yes, the drop in rankings was based on 2022 data before they fixed the broken selection criteria used by the old process.

Yeah that was the year of the freshman of the new selection process who were 25% FARMs (URM according to USNews) and represented a sizable increase in the URM population at TJ. They also scored significantly worse on SOLs as compared to previous years URM, albeit a very small number of students. This is not really up for debate.

And even more, the non-URM students of the new class scored worse than previous years,

Interestingly enough, average FCPS schools scored on average better than the previous year (2020-2021) result.

The new admissions system throws away important information of applying students like teachers’ recommendations and test score. They have turned everything into a lottery. No surprise that even non-URM admitted students are not as good as before. This year is also the first time a TJ student failed SOL.

Right now we have an equity dividend that brought the school from #1 to # 14. Number of remedial math students has gone up manifold. And PSAT for 2025 will be in the public domain in the next 6 months. What you got to show?

The caliber of Tj students has gone down and the rankings will reflect it. Not much to argue about. There will still be many gifted students who attend the school but they are surrounded by a lot of average students.

Out of total 2500+ applicants, a lower standard Algebra 1 math criteria was chosen to disqualified majority of the 1600+ Asian student applicants, who had higher Geometry/Algebra 2 math. In 2020, just 20+ algebra 1 students were admitted, but with admissions change in 2021, the algebra 1 offers went up to 198+. The US news ranking slide from 1st to 5th, and now to 14th reflects this declined talent in student body.

That's can't be true since selection is race blind. Students may be disqualified but they don't know their race.

Exactly they're picking the very top students from each school! This much better than the old system that simply favored wealthy schools where parents could afford to invest in test prep.

Or we could simply look at how TJ ranking dropped from #1 to #14 under the old selection process and conclude that these changes were necessary to restore TJ's reputation after the rampant gaming of selection in recent years.

Yes, the drop in rankings was based on 2022 data before they addressed the problems with selection.

Unfortunately, it appears that USNWR lowers scores for schools when URMs don’t perform well on standardized tests.

You can look at it however you want, but the rankings probably won’t go back up until standardized test scores go back.

The ranking doesn’t matter anyway and rewards gatekeeping to some extent. TJs new admissions process is doing the opposite.
