Is meat from the deli counter ok?

Anonymous
So a little worried after the WHO now saying processed meats cause cancer. Is the meat that they cut at the deli counter ok??? Or is that considered processed too?
Anonymous
Of course it is processed.

Yes, any meat that comes off the slicer is processed.

So it's no better than the meats that come prepackaged and pre-sliced??

I have been trying to avoid deli meat for a few years now so I switched to buying the fresh roasted turkey breast at WF. They actually have a turkey breast that was roasted that day and slice it up for you. My kids like it more than the processed deli meat.

Most delis use Boar's Head. Of course it's processed.

What, exactly, do you think "processed food" means?

I mean, bread is processed food. So is cheese and yogurt. And beer. And wine. All processed food.

Throw it out.

What do you people eat for lunch? I need a lunch that takes less than 5 minutes to prep and make.

Bread is processed food if it's packaged and has preservatives. bread is NOT processed food if someone made it themselves out of a few ingredients and it will go stale in a couple of days. Some cheese is not processed as much as other cheeses.

Look for meats that have a shorter expiration time and a lower ingredients list. Some butchers will be able to sell you sliced meats with a minimum of additives.

Processed meat has been know to possibly cause cancer for a LONG time now...just because the WHO has made it their formal stance now doesn't change anything. IDK how some people apparently didn't know the possible risks of processed foods until just now.

We buy the in store roasted turkey from Giant. There are tons of brands out there that also do not have nitrates.

Do some research. I have no idea now all of a sudden people are freaking out.

Some sliced turkey does have nitrates in it so check the labels.

This is correct.

You're an idiot for freaking out about this. And the WHO really discredits themselves for making such a big thing about this.

Keep in mind that the increased cancer risk is very slight. I know that processed food is bad but I love a good ham sandwich. Eat it with a salad if it makes you feel better (not that the salad will negate the risk of eating lunchmeat).
