I'm 37 weeks and 1 cm dilated

what does it mean? Does it mean the baby will arrive earlier or you can actually be dilated 1 cm for several weeks. This is my second child and I remember that when I arrived at the hospital with full contractions and with a lot of pain, my doctor told me I was 1 cm dilated only and sent me home. How is this possible?

You can be dilated for weeks--that's totally normal. Dilation doesn't happen on any standard schedule. In fact, the body can dilate several inches and then reverse (e.g. in cases of stress).

You can be walking around dilated for a while. I was 3 cm for nearly 3 weeks before I went into labor. The good news was that when I finally did go into labor I was 6 cm by the time I got to the hospital... so maybe dilating early moved things along. Bad news is that getting to 6 can be painful .

I was 2 cm last wk at my 36 wk appt. The dr didn't say anything about being early.

OP, what did the dr say? Did they give you any info or expectations?

Yeah, I was 2-3 cm and 50% effaced at 37 weeks. I didn't go into labor until 41 weeks 6 days. I don't think that any predictions can be made based on this data.

Call or see your doctor if you're concerned. If you're in labor, you can look forward to seeing your baby soon!

OP - you've got 9cm to go (and that can take a long time to get to that point which is why you were sent home...especially if there were no other signs of labor).

Only being 1cm is rather minor in the grand scheme of things. Lots of women walk around and function normally being dilated much more - hec, I was 4 cm. at my 37 week prenatal visit and didn't even know it.

And what do you mean by a "full contraction" in your original posting? It's normal (and expected) to have contractions here and there during the end of the 3rd trimester. Sometimes they are uncomfortable - were you really "in a lot of pain"?

She's talking about her first pregnancy, not her current one.

I have been dilated at 1.5 cm for three weeks now...It's pretty annoying but doctor have no concern about the baby coming early....

Also 37 weeks and 1 cm - my doctor indicated that early dilation can sometimes predict whether a labor will go more quickly/smoothly, but is not really any kind of predictor when labor will start.

There have been lots of threads about the uselessness of cervical checks. You can go from 0-10 very quickly or you can walk around at 1 cm (or 3 cm) dilated for weeks. How dilated you are at 37 weeks is an indicator only of, well, how dilated you are at 37 weeks.
