How often to replace non-slip mat in tub

Anonymous
We've had it for maybe over a year...pulled it up yesterday to clean the tub and noticed the bottom is gross. I should just toss it, right? Is this one of those things that I'm supposed to just replace every so often? What do you do?

Also, littlest kid is 2.5, so do I even need one of these things anymore?

We put down strips - I think DH got them at Home Depot? They adhere and stay there for years.

If you have a mat, I'd scrub it, then soak in vinegar and water combo or something like that.

I don't believe in non-slip mats. If someone slips in the bath and cracks their head open, it is because Jesus is calling them to be with Him.

Wash it in the washing machine with bleach. You can do the same with your shower curtain liner. No need to create more plastic waste.

Agree with PP (not about Jesus) -- soak it in some bleach or vinegar and put it in the sun outside. Should be good as new.

And we also use strips. I got them on Amazon. Can't wait until the youngest is old enough not to need them!

When was the last time you had removed it? We pull ours up after each use and put hang it over the shower curtain rod to dry.

We also pull up ours after each use, so it can dry out and not mold. Duh!!

OP here - I will look into those strips!

Good tip on the washing machine, too. I suppose from now on I'll pull it up each time, too. I normally would remove it to wash underneath, but we recently started getting house cleaning done 2x a month so I haven't been the one cleaning the tub.

We do this, too, but it still gets gross after a while. Machine washing (with towels to scrub it) helps. We still end up needing new ones every few years, though.

Hot water, vinegar, and sunshine. Good as new.

I just replaced mine after a year. It was so gross. Probalby should have replaced at 6 months.

I let mine dry after every use. I occasionally bleach it in the tub with the shower curtain longer. I imagine the bleaching will cause it to wear out sooner than daily use would. I actually started using it myself because I'm pregnant and am afraid my balance isn't so good anymore.

+1. Our mats and shower liners last for 5-8 years this way

I just got the strips (actually, little squares from Bed Bath and Beyond). The mat was disgusting and the strips are much more low maintenance.

I take it up every time it is used and it never gets gross and they last for year's. This is cleanliness 101.
