Original Art

Brown’s Fine Art in Jackson carries a lot of Mississippi artists, including the occasional consignment piece by Walter Anderson, Marie Hull, etc. They don’t list prices on their website, but I’ve called and ordered paintings over the phone, easy peasy.

I also like Cole Pratt Gallery in New Orleans. They represent a wide variety of artists, not just Louisiana artists, and they’re also wonderful to work with.

As far as Louisiana artists working now, I’m really taken with the work of Andrew Lamar Hopkins.

It's fascinating artists who are 99% as talented as the 1% but sell for 1% of the famous artists. Makes no sense but that tells you the reality of the art world. It's ephemeral, fueled by emotions, not logic, irrational and plenty of bubbles.

Can you name some auction house sites?

I have bought two large-ish pieces by local artists that I absolutely adore from Morton Fine Art (local gallery). Both artists are known in the wider art community — one now shows a lot in NYC and the other shows in SF and LA. Both pieces were from relatively early in the artist’s career and were in the $3k-$5k range. Who knows if they have appreciated in value, but both artists have won awards and become represented by more famous galleries since I bought their work. I don’t ever plan on selling the work, though, because they are my favorite things I own.
