We need to change the sex offender laws

What they are doing to this kid is ridiculous!

Niles — Locked up for 73 days, teen Zach Anderson walked out of the Berrien County Jail last month and received an ominous message from his probation officer: The tough part was just beginning.

His probation imposed 61 restrictions. No Internet access for five years. An 8 p.m. curfew. He can’t go to restaurants that serve alcohol.

Worst of all, he’s on the Indiana Sex and Violent Offender Registry for 25 years, a scarlet letter that will make it hard for the 19-year-old to find a job or a place to live.

His crime was having sex with an underage teen.

Anderson of Elkhart drove just across the Indiana-Michigan border and hooked up with a 14-year-old Niles girl who he says told him she was 17. The age of consent in Michigan is 16.

ITA. We've gone way overboard with these. They're un-Constitutional.

That is absolutely outrageous, but this is just one example of the life-destroying abuses of "criminal justice" processes in this country.

I am OP, and I agree.

There are bigger problems at play here. I agree he has a harsh punishment. But, kids and adults need to understand that social media and dating sites can cause harm. His parents should have taught him that.

So his life is ruined because he had sex with a WILLING and LYING partner?

One of my friends brothers got his girlfriend pregnant. He was 19 and she was 17. HER parents had him arrested, thrown in jail and put on the sex offender registry. I feel for the innocent baby in all of that. Fast forward several years and he still can't get a good job due mostly to his sex offender status, but he's still with the girl and their baby.

Nope, sorry. He's still young.

Agree with OP.

There are many like him across the country.

I think they need an age limit. A 50 year old having sex with a 16 year old is not the same thing as an 18 year old having sex with a 16 year old.

I've also known of women who won't report their child's fathers for being sex offenders because then the father would lose his job and not be able to pay child support or help support the kid.

Great to see the Detroit News has JUST come around to writing about this story, one month after the freaking New York Times did and almost a year after the South Bend Tribune covered it.

Yeah I bet that generality will catch Billy's attention. "Billy, be careful with social media and dating sites, they can cause harm!"

Love how this girl knowingly and willing deceives a man of legal age of her not-legal age and suffers not a single consequence as a result.
