Surplussing the old Hardy School, again

Anonymous
In December 2014 the Gray administration tried to give a 50-year lease on the old Hardy School on Foxhall Road to the private Lab School. We discussed it here:

After a torrent of public opposition the idea was withdrawn. It's back:

In accordance with section §10-801(a)(4) of the DC Official Code, this letter serves as notice that the
District of Columbia Department of General Services has determined that the Hardy School located at
1550 Foxhall Road, NW (also known as 4470 Foxhall Road, NW) is surplus. Accordingly, the District
intends to amend an existing lease with Lab School of Washington, Inc. ("LSW") to extend term to a
period of greater than twenty (20) years with the LSW. The Department of General Services will host a
public hearing on June 9, 2015 to discuss the surplus designation of the Hardy School and the intent of
the District to amend the existing lease of the school. The hearing will be held at the Hardy School multipurpose
room located 1550 Foxhall Road, NW Washington DC 20007 at 6:30PM.

WTF this needs to go to an immersion charter. That neighborhood would eat it up!

IIRC about a year ago the Council changed the law so that charters had to get first dibs. I'm not sure why that doesn't apply.

Lab school has powerful friends in DC even though most students are from MD and VA.

DC residents or DCPS pays annual tuition over $30,000 for students to attend Lab. Compare this with the $9,000 DC charges out of state students to attend Ellington.

Students at the closest school -key- are in trailers. This decision is not being made with the needs if DC students in mind.

It should be. As someone whose child is graduating an excellent charter this year and went through the Facility Woes while dcps sold.off amazing buildings I won't stand for this..I also would accept a sweetheart deal for D.C. students with LAB- the need for high quality special needs education is so prevalent. One or the other. Who do we contact pp?

This! A petition needs to be started. I'm only in favor of a plan that provides significant benefit to DC kids. Otherwise, no way!

With Upper NW schools overflowing, a new DCPS school should be considered for this space.

I am a charter school parent but fine with anything that benefits any dc kids. We all raise each other up.

Petitions are for cowards and ineffective without matching testimony. Sign up, speak out and bring numbers. It can be surprisingly effective.

I agree - this could be an instant-neighborhood-school.

Ward 3 needs a new middle school. Half the ward no longer has access to Deal and few ward residents consider Hardy an option because of the significant quality gap with Deal.

I know that folks keep raising this. DC is *never* going to build a new middle school just because you don't like the perfectly good middle school that you already have. It is ridiculous to suggest it. Now overcrowding is another story. The argument for another high school is stronger. Though folks can rightfully point out that DC has lots of high schools with extra capacity, they are in parts of the city that are much farther away.
