OP here; that's what struck me too, how they do look much older than they are, and that they always have serious (maybe even morose) expressions. I think their younger (or is she older?) sister, Elizabeth, tends to be happy looking in general, from photos I've seen now and then.

I think this is what happens when you grow up with people trying to use you and creepy grown men counting down the days until you turn 18. Shudder. I don't blame them for trying to downplay their looks and cover up.
