Opium Problem

Anonymous
I walked into my basement last Saturday and caught my DC and his friends getting "doped" on opium!!1 Obviously I interrogated him, and he said that there is a large opium economy in DC private schools!! I am very concerned for my DC, and wanted to warn other DCUMs about this problem. Based on what my DC said, I infer that that a significant portion of students are "blazing." What should we do??

You need to focus on your own kid, and getting him help if he needs it to quit, rather than focusing on a "culture" of opium smoking, if one exists.

I call troll. opium is actually quite difficult to consume. Its derivatives are something else, but opium is tough and requires some specific equipment.

Disagree .. you need to call each parent of the kids there, apologize for being the bearer of bad news and ask them for help involvement ideas communication etc
Keep in close contact if possible with the parents because there is a group dynamic that needs to be addressed. Get a drug counselor and start going to family therapy.
Hopefully it just started recently and isn't too ingrained. All the best to you. Be hopeful.

No!! It was not "dabs" or "opiates", it was definitely opium. I am very concerned for other DCUMs, because my son definitely stated it was opium, and they were smoking it out of a long pipe. Has anyone else known if their DC's or other DC's are doing opium too? My DC is a very good student, and so are his friends!

Oh you troll. What school?

Have you told the other parents? If not, you should do that. Wouldn't you want to know? After that - I don't know. I'd be inclined to tell the school and the police so they can track down the supplier. Maybe cut his pocket money!!

I have been thru the special school route and its to be avoided if possible. Boys can be cavalier and headstrong tho. You might have to show him web sites of the awful Utah programs where kids are sent so he takes it seriously and quits. A new time consuming volunteer job on the weekend might help. There is a nice group of gtown u kids running a soup kitchen at grace church gtown. On the weekends. An alternative social group

There is no opium economy.

Opium is kind of rare, since heroin is a lot more potent, less bulky and easier to smuggle. Usually opium is processed very close to the fields into morphine base. Opium looks like crap (literally) and smells spicy/sweet nice (exactly like the perfume by YSL). Long 19th century Chinese opium pipes are not the usual way people use the drug. Any pipe would do.

When kids say they are "blazing" it means they are smoking pot. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Blazing It is really easy to tell the difference. Unlike opium, pot smoke stinks like a skunk. Take a whiff of the pipe.

If you think he was using an illegal substance, there's no reason to assume he was telling the truth or that he knew what he was using. A high kid might find it funny to say he was using opium when he got busted and mom didn't know the difference.

FWIW - Nationally about 35% of high school seniors smoked pot within the last year. It is about as normal as drinking alcohol underage. Fewer than 5% are daily smokers. Clinical intervention is only necessary in the small number of cases with drug dependence. Otherwise you treat it like any kind of teenager transgression like staying out past curfew.
