How old is too old for an American Girl doll?

Actually I think that is the perfect age- they are expensive dolls. I would get her a historical doll and the book set. She will be able to enjoy and understand the stories, take care of the doll, and could even participate in some sewing projects for the doll. I wouldn’t even entertain getting one for a girl under 8.

I'm happy as long as my girl wants to play with dolls I will let her play with dolls. When I gave up dolls I became boy crazy

I got my first American Girl doll around age 11. I loved playing with her & learned a lot from the books. My daughter has them now. 10 is not too old.

My DD got her first AG doll at age 10 and one of the last in her group o give it up (she won’t let me get rid of anything, and she’s 15 now).

My daughter is almost 13 and still loves hers. None of her friends play with them but she doesn’t care.

Like a PP stated, role play with dolls is better than many other activities. If DD wants one, and you are able to get her the real deal, why not?

I also secretly played with dolls until 14.

The historical dolls are so great for learning.

My 10 yo son asked for one when he was in kindergarten after playing with his best friend's AG doll at her house. We were expecting him to lose interest in it when he started grade school. But no, these days he loves video games, action figures and star wars and also plays little league. But still plays with his doll a few times a week. His best friend still brings hers over and they play with them together.

I'd get her the real thing. These tween years are filled with both childlike play and older stuff. It's a weird mix, and they will go back and forth. She may end up considering it a collectable.

Full disclosure.....my daughter only has the Target brand dolls that look like American Girl dolls because I couldn't afford to buy her more than one American Girl Doll. But, she is 11 1/2 and the playing with dolls hasn't slowed down at all. She still loves Barbies, and the AG type dolls. She has 5 of them, has tons of clothes for them, and loves to do their hair. She has beds for them, dresses them up for special occasions, and reads to them. I see nothing wrong with it at all.

I remember loving my dolls until at least 13, and I'm still upset that my mother got rid of my favorite doll when I stopped playing with it because I would have loved to keep it to at least show to my daughters.

I was almost 13 when I got an AG because I thought they were too expensive to ask for and my mom didn’t want to spend the money if I didn’t want one. Finally she just decided to do it anyway one Christmas. I definitely didn’t play with it the way my 8 year old plays with hers, but I still liked doing the hair and changing her outfits. I agree if she wants one she’s not too old.
