Help name my dog!

Winner!

I like this too. I will say, I worried about a name, thought a nickname was important. It all went out the door pretty quickly. My dog is bilingual so he has a name that translates and knows commands but that's basically a party trick. We NEVER use the obvious nickname.

Carloso is kinda cute. Not a fan of Oso and I say that as someone whose dog is nicknamed "bear."

Holy shit. Who else took the CAT tests in New York in the 80's? Remember the memory test? "Baloo is a bear. Remember, baloo is a bear." "Wuzzle is an old man. Remember, wuzzle is an old man." And then we'd have to match the made up word to the definition. PP your saying Baloo reminded me of this.

I will never forget "a baloo is a bear" but I took the CAT in Texas before the state developed it's own tests. I remember taking it very seriously but we'd also mess around saying the phrases to each other in class.

no shade- first thing that came to mind

Why? That's a woman's name.

Op do you have a name you like? I would come up with a third option so it is a family dog name. Maybe wait until you meet him to see his personality?

We are Jewish and I wanted to name our dog Simcha, Matzo or Challah. Kids both have meaningful Hebrew names so I thought it would be cute.

Kids nixed it.

Younger kid wanted to name the dog Meringue. Older kid thought that was ridiculous but agreed puppy looked a bit like meringue.

Husband latched on to the Jewish idea but was too serious about it and wanted to name the dog Rachamim.

We named the dog Rachamim Meringue Simcha and we call her Roxi. 🤣

Rex is good.
Boo (love Boo)
Clyde
Bonecrusher
Tiny
We have a dog on our block named Taco. He sort of looks like a Taco.

Disagree. There are so many potential nicknames! Carlos, Carl (wasn’t there a children’s book with a Rottweiler named Carl?) Oso, Lolo, Lalo, etc.

I mean, Bonecrusher? You think Carlos is a mouthful but not BONECRUSHER??

I was just joking with that one.

When we were naming our dog I read that you should not name a dog something that sounds like no, since then the dog has a hard time distinguishing between telling them no and saying their name.

Also, shouldn't have "s" sound at the end, especially in terms of the sit command. Dogs, as I understand it, mostly hear one word. So, their name + the command, which alerts them, then tells them what to do. I think this is why some people are responding negatively to Oso. Oso sit sounds a lot like one word.

I thought the new thinking was not to use the word "no?" Sure I suppose if you are not a Positive trainer you can use no but, there are better ways. I wouldn't pick that name because it isn't a family name. This is why we kept our dog's name that the fosters named it! Find a name you all will like

I know a dog named Latke. My dog also has 3 names in addition to our last name: 1) Name we picked 2) his previous name 3) his sire’s last name (sire was named after famous human athlete) 4) our last name

I mean, you're going to call him that *maybe* 20% of the time. My dog rarely gets called by his actual name

So true! My dog will answer to so many nicknames. 😂
