Thanks at least for the effort. No such thing as immaterial though. I'm pretty sure (although I'm not a scientist or physicist) that energy can be detected, and as far as I know nothing immaterial can be detected.

Your "essence" is just your personality, which dies when the brain dies. Any other conceptualization is just conjecture.

What animates a living being? What is the difference between a living body and a dead body?

C'mon. We're all adults here. If you start a thread asking about "your soul," there's nothing wrong with asking for a definition of "soul"? Its's a rather nebulous concept, and many respondents would probably be talking about several different things. You can't discuss "soul" until you've defined the term so we're all understand what we're talking about.

The definition of “soul” is easily found online. Nobody here has their own personal definition. Nobody here has a definition that is more accurate than the definition you can read with just a simple search.

“We” aren’t going to define what a soul is here in this anonymous thread. My goodness, tamp down your arrogance just a bit.

So you got nothing, fine. You can't define "soul" because there's no such thing. Your "essence" while you are alive is just a function of the neurons firing in the brain. When that ceases, there's nothing left. Period.

I visited my dad this weekend. He is dying of cancer and it’s only a matter of days before he passes, so I had to say my goodbyes. He drifted in and out of consciousness while I sat by his bedside, but he did mention some things clearly. He said he saw a figure walking through water. When I asked him if he recognized the figure, he said “it’s perfect.” He kept repeating it here and there… “figure. Walk through water. It’s perfect.” Then he smiled, and drifted back out again.

As to what it is he saw, I don’t know. But it seems to me that he’s hovering in between this world and the next. Maybe he saw someone from his past, maybe he saw himself, maybe a vision of God or an angel or the soul. Probably not something my earthly mind can understand. But it put him at peace and he is ready for the next journey. And that made me happy.

There’s a definition for the word soul. Incredibly, I don’t make up definitions for words that have been around for hundreds of years. I know, it’s very shocking I do not, nor do you, nor does anyone who posts here.

You have an opinion, as do most people. Americans hold a wide range of beliefs about spirits and related matters. About nine-in-ten U.S. adults believe in God or another higher power. More than eight-in-ten Americans believe that people have a soul or spirit (83%) and 81% say there is something spiritual beyond the natural world, even if we cannot see it.

In addition, majorities of U.S. adults believe in heaven (71%) and hell (61%).




Really has no bearing on what I believe, what you and other people believe. I am not threatened by other people’s opinions and beliefs. If you are, that’s your issue. You may want to calm down and accept that others have opinions that may not be the same as your opinions. We don’t all think the same. Another shocker. You probably will be much happier to stop worrying about other people’s beliefs, since the most well adjusted and intelligent people don’t feel threatened by the beliefs of other people.
