Any of the T15

LACs are ironically the best place to send a kid interested in an academic career and it’s where academics themselves tend to send their kids.

If my kid really makes a good case for a college or university, that's where she'll go, no matter the price.

I need her to convince me, though.

That seems arbitrary. I really think your kids are a product of your families values. We discuss value over prestige on a lot of things (cars, clothes, etc) We had one kid decide to take a Banneker Key scholarship over a T20 school full pay (Nothwestern). We would have paid but our kid realized that it didn’t make sense to give up free college. They got a masters degree at UMD and have a nice Six figure job. Other kid picked high merit at Case Western over full pay at Carnegie Mellon, we would have paid, but they didn’t want us to spend it. They have a great internship lined up this summer in their field and really like their school and classmates.

None. Mine only applied to Amherst and declined their full pay offer.

Swarthmore if thinking of engineering/STEM
Williams or Amherst for business/connections

I think they meant they are full pay there. My kid got into Pomona, but got no $ so declined.

They probably applied and waited to see if any aid was coming their way.

My pick for full pay would be:

Williams
Swarthmore
Pomona
Grinnell
Harvey Mudd

I don't understand; don't you know ahead of time whether you're going to get aid? Don't you fill out the net price calculator before applying? It is well known that these schools don't have merit scholarships.

I would do Amherst. My kid is going there and had options at other LACs with merit but chose Amherst. Didn’t look at macalester so no specific comments on that school

Without consulting you on cost first?

I'd full pay at Williams, Amherst and Swarthmore, maybe at Pomona or Bowdoin.
