Outdoor music at Freedom Plaza (near WH) -- super loud -- cannot even think even though 2 blocks away in office building

It's telling that no state celebrates it. And in Washington, only the DC government observes it. Seems like an excuse for the lazy DC government workforce to be, well, more lazy.

Why would states celebrate DC's emancipation day?? April 16, 1862 marks the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia. Over 3,000 enslaved persons were freed eight months before the Emancipation Proclamation liberated slaves in the South.

What about Juneteenth?

That’s when enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free. It really has nothing to do with DC.

So, you are telling me that the District government shuts down to celebrate a Texan holiday?

Juneteenth became a national holiday under President Biden after Trump made it a 2020 campaign pledge (to get the African American vote). DC Emancipation Day did not get elevated to federal holiday status.

So, DC needs two days to celebrate this?

Juneteenth is a weird holiday to commemorate the day some folks in Texas finally learned of their emancipation well after they were already legally emancipated. I’m not sure how or why it was picked, because it’s not even broadly relevant to the Black experience.

Someone can correct me or elaborate, but Juneteenth was specifically chosen since Trump turned the holiday into a campaign slogan to get the African American vote. Then when Biden was elected he followed up and made it a federal holiday. I suppose Trump could’ve picked DC Emancipation Day instead. Then that very well could have been the federal holiday and not Juneteenth.

What holiday is Biden creating for this election cycle?

Student loan repayment holiday. The guy is a total panderer.

We actually do need many more paid holidays to catch up with our European counterparts who are equally productive yet enjoy a seemingly endless number of bank holidays and long siestas. Hopefully Trump will come up with another holiday idea to get the vote of whatever ethnocultural group will help him win, and when he loses despite that effort, President Biden will then make it a federal holiday. How about a holiday to commemorate the Bataan Death March, one of the greatest survival stories in the history of the US military? CNN had a great article on it a few weeks ago. It is a holiday to this day in the Philippines.
