What is the bigger issue for HS: CIP or SBG?

Do those grades get “converted” to the new system? They have A’s A-s and B+. Seems really unfair to throw in a completely new system for just one year of their HS education. They should just start implemented the new grading system with the rising freshman.

Not sure what would happen with previous grades. If they are used to having As, they will likely be a B/C student senior year. It could affect merit based scholarships if they are on that track.

SBG is not bad in theory. It could be good if implemented properly but that’s not what is happening in our experience. In some classes it is not clear what will or won’t be used to assess skill acquisition. With all the things put on teachers’ plates these days, feedback on assessments may not be returned for a month or more. Lack of timely feedback means that students don’t know that they should’ve retaken assessments (sometimes they thought they did well be did not). If FCPS admin/principals do not get teachers help in providing timely feedback this system falls apart quickly. To top it off teachers are not consistently applying SBG and it leaves students confused and stressed whether they are on the college track or not.

The lack of clarity is a feature, not a bug. This way teachers can always justify grades that close the gap. Equity intensifies.

More than a bit melodramatic, no?

I'd focus on the argument that SBG may disincentivize kids from working their hardest and regularly paying attention in class, rather than imply a kid's life is going to be ruined if they end up at VCU rather than UVA.

A kid’s life won’t be ruined. But their trajectory will be different. And for no good reason other than a refusal to acknowledge the pilot is a failure.

is Mount Vernon High School doing SBG Grading?

SBG has many flaws, but rather than reiterate them here, just go to the other thread. Everyone at the grading meeting was on the same page about all issues give or take a small deviation of intensity as to how much of a problem each issue was. If the entire group of parents had consensus on how they would like school to be run, why does FCPS have such a problem with implementation.

Because the administration does not care what parents think. Gatehouse is all knowing and will continue to do as the please.

OP here: FCPS ran a focus group about grading. The facilitators asked about x, y, z about grading in FCPS and most of the parents were like, OK, but that's not how things are implemented at our school. Parents were not pleased.

The old bait and switch play is being used by the administration. They tell parents it is great, wow them with fancy and confusing PowerPoints and then implement SBG in a totally different way than it was designed and described in their presentations to parents. The plan is working great so far and once they have a critical mass of schools using SBG it will be too late for everyone.

So standardized tests become more important.

Which grading meeting? Are you talking about the one last week (April)?

How many on DCUM participated in the meeting on April 1? Parents were not happy.

What meeting? What school? Which parents? You post a ton of "inside baseball" information without providing context.

FCPS held focus groups at HHS about grading.

No, you're just not paying attention. Parents complained loudly and the school board heard. They tried to fix the problem with the new 100 point change. Gatehouse went around them - but the school board is still in charge. They can fix the grading again, maybe successfully this time.

Are you saying the SB and Gatehouse are not on the same page on this???

No rational person would want SBG as it is being implemented in FCPS. Being driven out of Gatehouse as a means to implement equitable grading.
